The court ruling generated national headlines that helped RAICES raise $100,000, a sizable haul for the legal-aid group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, we were really blown away,\u201d recalled Jenny Hixon, development director for RAICES.<\/p>\n<p>But that was nothing compared to the last two weeks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"module align-left half type-aside\">\n<h3>About this article<\/h3>\n<p>This article originally appeared in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2018\/06\/27\/viral-facebook-fundraiser-has-generated-more-20-million-immigration-no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Texas Tribune<\/a>,\u00a0a nonpartisan, nonprofit media organization that informs Texans and engages with them about public policy, politics, government and statewide issues.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>One night earlier this month \u2014\u00a0amid nationwide outrage over the Trump administration\u2019s \u201czero tolerance\u201d immigration policy, which has forced more than 2,500 migrant children to be separated from their parents at the border \u2014\u00a0Hixon received an unexpected email from a married couple in the Bay Area, Dave and Charlotte Willner. A Facebook page the Willners had started just a few hours earlier to raise money for RAICES was taking off faster than expected, as people across the country reacted with horror to photographs and news stories documenting family separations. With any luck, the couple predicted, the campaign might even break a million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next week and a half, the Facebook page quickly transformed from a promising online fundraiser into a viral phenomenon, generating around $20.5 million, three times RAICES\u2019 annual budget and more than 40 times what the nonprofit raised in the entirety of 2017. The fundraiser\u00a0has drawn support from celebrities like Jimmy Fallon, who made a donation to RAICES this week in Donald Trump\u2019s name.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could just sit there and watch the total change. It was incredible,\u201d Hixon said. \u201cAt one point, I copied the number from the website and put it into a Word document to add commas. I really thought I was not reading the number correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the funds donated on Facebook, RAICES has received $5 million in contributions through its official website, which briefly crashed last week because of increased traffic. The organization plans to use that money to pay for legal representation for separated families and to hire new attorneys to bolster its staff of 65 full-time immigration lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing the best we can to scale up quickly,\u201d Hixon said. \u201cWe just want to be good stewards of the money and good stewards of the attention.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Hiring a lawyer to represent an immigrant with a claim to asylum typically costs between $1,000 and $10,000, according to Jason Finkelman, a Texas-based immigration attorney who is not affiliated with RAICES. More complicated cases lead to higher fees, Finkelman said, and those involving children and spouses often generate especially significant expenses. \u201cThere\u2019s no such thing as a cookie-cutter immigration case,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Finkelman added, \u201c$20 million can go a very long way in helping thousands of people who typically wouldn\u2019t be able to afford legal representation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RAICES is hardly the first nonprofit to receive an unexpected cash windfall with the help of social media. In 2014, the ALS Association \u2014\u00a0a group that raises money to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease \u2014\u00a0generated more than $100 million through the viral ice-bucket challenge, in which participants posted videos on Facebook of ice-cold water being poured over their heads.<\/p>\n<p>As RAICES begins using its newfound resources, the nonprofit would do well to emulate the ALS Association\u2019s example, said Tim Seiler, former director of Indiana University\u2019s Fund Raising School.<\/p>\n<p>Before it spent the money generated by the ice-bucket challenge, the ALS Association solicited input on how to use the funds from a panel of advisors that included patients living with Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease. Seiler said RAICES should copy that approach by seeking advice from local community members invested in supporting immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need to stop and realize that this is probably a one-time thing,\u201d Seiler said. \u201cThey have this huge influx of money, and they\u2019re going to need to be very prudent about its use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RAICES was founded by South Texas activists in 1986, as waves of Central American immigrants entered the United States. In its early years, the nonprofit \u2014\u00a0known at the time as the Refugee Aid Project \u2014\u00a0provided clothing and medical help to migrants, said John Blatz, an attorney who has worked for the organization for decades. RAICES now has offices throughout Texas, including three sites in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>That 30-year history of immigration activism should assure potential donors that RAICES is a trustworthy steward of the millions of dollars flooding its coffers, said Hixon, the nonprofit\u2019s development chief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t start speaking out on this issue because we just figured out it was important,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s always been important to us.
