PASSAGE WILL SHOW THAT WE WANT STRONG BORDERS &amp; SECURITY WHILE THE DEMS WANT OPEN BORDERS = CRIME. WIN!&#8221; the president <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1011952266268545024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>House GOP leadership put forward this bill in an attempt to tamp down a revolt from the moderate wing of the party. In an end-run around their leaders, Republican moderates like U.S. Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/will-hurd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Will Hurd<\/a> of Helotes, spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2018\/05\/09\/hurd-leads-effort-force-house-vote-immigration-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the early summer deploying an obscure procedural tactic<\/a> called a discharge petition in order to force a vote on several immigration bills.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the 36-member Texas delegation voted against the bill, including all the Democrats. Only Republican U.S. Reps. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/joe-barton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Barton<\/a> of Ennis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/kevin-brady\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin Brady<\/a> of the Woodlands, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/mike-conaway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mike Conaway<\/a> of Midland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/bill-flores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Flores<\/a> of Bryan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/jeb-hensarling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeb Hensarling<\/a> of Dallas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/michael-mccaul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael McCaul<\/a> of Austin, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/mac-thornberry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mac Thornberry<\/a> of Clarendon voted for the bill. Hurd voted against the bill.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Last week, a more conservative bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2018\/06\/21\/family-separation-saga-us-house-conservative-immigration-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also failed<\/a> on the House floor. House leaders had originally intended the compromise vote to take place on the same day. Amid concerns that the more moderate bill might not only fail but do so spectacularly, they kicked the vote back to this week, hoping to shore up support.<\/p>\n<p>While Republicans called the measure a &#8220;compromise bill, &#8220;the dealmaking occurred solely among members of the GOP. Democrats were not a part of the process and unanimously opposed the bill.<\/p>\n<p>This debate over this legislation began weeks ago, long before the immigration crisis on the border involving the separation of families exploded into the national consciousness \u2013 but it has no doubt been affected by the controversy.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all of the effort, the bill&#8217;s would have faced trouble in the U.S. Senate had it passed out of the House.
