{"id":589860,"date":"2018-06-05T20:15:48","date_gmt":"2018-06-06T02:15:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=589860"},"modified":"2018-06-05T22:58:38","modified_gmt":"2018-06-06T04:58:38","slug":"no-surprise-here-pearce-to-face-lujan-grisham-in-november","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2018\/06\/no-surprise-here-pearce-to-face-lujan-grisham-in-november\/","title":{"rendered":"No surprise here: Pearce to face Lujan Grisham in November"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_565685\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignnone\" style=\"max-width: 771px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-565685\" src=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Lujan-Grisham-Michelle-771x522.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle Lujan Grisham\" width=\"771\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Lujan-Grisham-Michelle.jpg 771w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Lujan-Grisham-Michelle-336x227.jpg 336w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Lujan-Grisham-Michelle-768x520.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Courtesy photo<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michelle Lujan Grisham<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After an Albuquerque Journal poll recently showed Michelle Lujan Grisham with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/1177219\/journal-poll-big-lead-for-lujan-grisham-us-representative-has-almost-4to1-margin-over-closest-challenger.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a commanding lead<\/a> in a three-way primary for the Democratic nomination for governor, it wasn&#8217;t surprising that she was declared winner soon after the polls closed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Journal pollster Brian Sanderoff called the race for Lujan Grisham <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/1181144\/lujan-grisham-wins-three-way-democratic-primary-for-governor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shortly after 7 p.m.<\/a> based on early voting results from just a handful of counties &#8212; not including Bernalillo County.<\/p>\n<p>Just after 8 p.m., <a href=\"http:\/\/electionresults.sos.state.nm.us\/resultsSW.aspx?type=SW&amp;map=CTY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statewide results<\/a> showed Lujan Grisham getting 71 percent of the vote to 18 percent for Jeff Apodaca and 11 percent for Joseph Cervantes.<\/p>\n<p>EMILY&#8217;S List, a national political advocacy organization for women, congratulated Lujan Grisham and spoke of the coming battle with Pearce.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now, she must fight to defeat an out-of-touch conservative to end eight years of harmful Republican policies in New Mexico,&#8221; the group&#8217;s president, Stephanie Schriock, said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Governor&#8217;s Association was quick to congratulate Pearce on advancing to the general election. The Democratic Governor&#8217;s Association was quick to hammer Pearce as &#8220;too extreme for New Mexico.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;New Mexico Republicans just nominated a Donald Trump clone for governor,&#8221; said the group&#8217;s executive director, Elisabeth Pearson.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s not been much publicly released polling, yet, of the Lujan Grisham\/Pearce contest. Pearce&#8217;s campaign released a poll in April showing him trailing Lujan Grisham <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpoliticalreport.com\/827130\/pearce-poll-puts-him-within-2-points-of-lujan-grisham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by two points<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to an NMPolitics.net request for analysis of Lujan Grisham&#8217;s victory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/haussamen\/posts\/10101898623340891?comment_id=10101898648400671&amp;notif_id=1528250299059131&amp;notif_t=feed_comment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Facebook<\/a>, several spoke glowingly about the Democratic nominee for governor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I voted for a strong progressive woman who is in line with my views,&#8221; Kimberly Fries Walker wrote. &#8220;Steve Pearce is so far from what I believe he isn&#8217;t even a consideration for me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s the real deal,&#8221; Bruce Malott wrote.<\/p>\n<p>K.C. Counts predicted the race to replace current Gov. Susana Martinez, a Republican, will be one to watch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think she and Steve both have a big negative after the last administration,&#8221; Counts wrote. &#8220;He&#8217;s a Republican and she&#8217;s a woman.
