Heather Wilson, R-N.M., and her Democratic challenger Patricia Madrid, locked in one of the tightest congressional races in the nation, debated the issues on Sunday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Conservative blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marioburgos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mario Burgos<\/a> recorded the event and plans to put much of it online. Of course, what he\u2019s put online thus far comes complete with his anti-Madrid commentary, but it\u2019s worth checking out if you missed the debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Madrid%2C%20Patricia.8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Madrid%2C%20Patricia.8.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>You should also check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joemonahan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Monahan\u2019s<\/a> analysis of the debate and coverage from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/493899nm09-18-06.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Also, a weekend article in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/493375nm09-16-06.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Journal<\/a> details another huge gift from Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino owner Stan Fulton that could become an issue for <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I reported <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2006\/05\/richardson-madrid-flirt-with.html\" target=\"_blank\">months ago<\/a> about the $125,000 <st1:city st=\"on\">Fulton<\/st1:city> gave to <st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state>\u2019s political action committee about the same time she formally opposed the proposal by the Jemez Pueblo and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> art dealer Gerald Peters to build a casino in Anthony. Around the same time, <st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state>\u2019s office also issued an advisory <span style=\"\" lang=\"EN\">letter stating that the casino developers\u2019 proposed services agreement with <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> was likely illegal.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\" lang=\"EN\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\" lang=\"EN\">Now, the Journal reports that <st1:city st=\"on\">Fulton<\/st1:city> gave $400,000 to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Highlands<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> for its football field. The field was dedicated to <st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state>\u2019s husband L. Michael Messina, a former regent at the school, after he secured the gift from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Fulton<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>, the Journal reported.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s campaign told the Journal she and her husband have been friends with the casino owner since 2002, when they met during her second campaign for attorney general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The gift to <st1:place st=\"on\">Highlands<\/st1:place> was made nine months before the Anthony proposal became public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here\u2019s a great quote from Fulton, who was asked if he expected anything in return for the gift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAbsolutely not, my goodness gracious,\u201d he told the Journal. \u201cI\u2019m very upset at being criticized for what I believe is doing good. If you\u2019re going to criticize me for giving money to this university, then I say shame on you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state>\u2019s campaign pointed out that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Fulton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> gave $1 million in 2001 to the Republican National Committee. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
