{"id":583336,"date":"2018-05-21T09:32:39","date_gmt":"2018-05-21T15:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=583336"},"modified":"2018-09-18T14:47:28","modified_gmt":"2018-09-18T20:47:28","slug":"behavioral-health-series-wins-national-investigative-reporting-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2018\/05\/behavioral-health-series-wins-national-investigative-reporting-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Behavioral health series wins national investigative reporting award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_471071\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignnone\" style=\"max-width: 771px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-471071 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/TorresYouTube-771x433.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"771\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/TorresYouTube-771x433.jpg 771w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/TorresYouTube-336x189.jpg 336w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/TorresYouTube-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/TorresYouTube-1170x657.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/TorresYouTube.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The series \u201cDistressed\u201d examined the life of Juan Gabriel Torres, whose ex-girlfriend and children built this memorial near the spot in Las Cruces where he was shot to death by police officers in 2016.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A journalistic project led by NMPolitics.net has won a national investigative reporting award for shining light on the state of the behavioral health system in Southern New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The National Federation of Press Women announced Friday that a team of journalists led by NMPolitics.net won first place in the group&#8217;s 2018 communications contest for investigative reporting for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/series\/distressed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 2017 series \u201cDistressed.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The series was the result of a months-long collaboration between NMPolitics.net,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/krwg.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KRWG<\/a>\u00a0that sought to quantify problems with the region\u2019s struggling behavioral health system, make the issue tangible through strong storytelling, and seek solutions.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the second time in three years that NMPolitics.net has competed against journalists from across the United States and won the group&#8217;s national investigative reporting award. In 2016, NMPolitics.net <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/06\/nmpolitics-net-wins-national-investigative-reporting-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won the award<\/a> for shining light on <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/08\/docs-may-reveal-potential-keller-conflict-on-state-fair-lease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a possible conflict of interest<\/a> Tim Keller, currently Albuquerque&#8217;s mayor, had when he was a state senator.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NMPolitics.net has become known nationally for its investigative reporting,&#8221; said editor and publisher Heath Haussamen. &#8220;We&#8217;re grateful for the newest recognition from the National Federation of Press Women.
