Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez<\/a>, D-Belen, is disputing a prior report<\/a> on this site stating that he has decided not to run for governor.<\/p>\n

But he\u2019s not saying anything beyond that.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026no final decision as of today. Can\u2019t elaborate but will let you know personally,\u201d he wrote in a brief e-mail to me this morning.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, I quoted a source with knowledge of the situation as saying Sanchez had decided not to run. I stand by that source, and I\u2019ll believe otherwise when Sanchez proves the source wrong.<\/p>\n

Many Democrats don\u2019t want Sanchez in the race because they want Lt. Gov. Diane Denish<\/a> to avoid a primary battle while the four Republicans who have declared their candidacy duke it out in a primary. Other Democrats don\u2019t like Denish\u2019s candidacy, and some of them want Sanchez to run.<\/p>\n

Time will tell what\u2019s really going on, but it\u2019s worth noting that Sanchez started down this road by grabbing headlines in late May when he posted a note on his Facebook page<\/a> stating that he \u201chas formed an exploratory committee and is still contemplating a run for governor.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t include any details or comment further, and there\u2019s been little public activity out of his apparent exploratory committee since.<\/p>\n

Update, 3:05 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let me clarify what I meant earlier. I\u2019m not saying Sanchez is lying or is currently not considering running for governor. I\u2019m saying that I\u2019m confident that, at the time of my prior report on Tuesday, Sanchez had decided against running for governor.
