Hector Balderas of Wagon Mound will replace him on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Joining Armijo at a news conference in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> were Democratic Party Chair John Wertheim and Speaker of the House Ben Lujan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The deal was apparently brokered by Lujan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Lujan%2C%20Ben.6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Lujan%2C%20Ben.2.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cOut of my profound respect for Speaker Lujan, I have concluded that in the interest of my wonderful fellow New Mexicans that I will not seek the office of state auditor,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\">Armijo<\/st1:place> said at the news conference, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqtrib.com\/news\/2006\/sep\/13\/dems-armijo-will-quit-auditor-race\/\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Armijo\u2019s lawsuit against the secretary of state and the Democratic Party\u2019s lawsuit against <st1:place st=\"on\">Armijo<\/st1:place> have both been dropped, said the party\u2019s executive director, Matt Farrauto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBoth lawsuits have been dropped, and Jeff has stepped aside,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Wertheim said at the news conference that this will allow the Democratic Party to move forward with its agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think that this resolves the dispute,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The announcement came just before a hearing this morning in district court in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on the Democratic Party\u2019s lawsuit. The hearing has been cancelled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019m still trying to reach <st1:place st=\"on\">Armijo<\/st1:place> for comment. His attorney, Paul M. Kienzle, told me he doesn\u2019t yet have any comment on what has happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Armijo<\/st1:place> announced that he would drop out of the race in late August because of allegations that he made unwanted sexual advances toward a campaign volunteer. Though he claims the allegations are false, Gov. Bill Richardson pressured him to drop out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Armijo<\/st1:place> changed his mind before last week\u2019s deadline to officially withdraw and announced he would not file the signed, notarized withdrawal letter that had typically been required by the secretary of state\u2019s office. The governor\u2019s office and Democratic Party argued that <st1:place st=\"on\">Armijo<\/st1:place>\u2019s prior public statements and actions constituted a withdrawal, and the secretary of state took his name off the ballot, leading to the lawsuits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jeff Armijo announced this morning that he is dropping his fight to remain the Democratic Party\u2019s candidate for state auditor.
