{"id":55824,"date":"2015-05-31T22:45:38","date_gmt":"2015-06-01T04:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=55824"},"modified":"2015-05-31T23:07:20","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T05:07:20","slug":"paper-tackles-lax-enforcement-of-campaign-reporting-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/05\/paper-tackles-lax-enforcement-of-campaign-reporting-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Paper tackles lax enforcement of campaign reporting laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_55834\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55834\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Duran-Dianna-336x232.jpg\" alt=\"Dianna Duran\" width=\"336\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Duran-Dianna-336x232.jpg 336w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Duran-Dianna.jpg 518w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Courtesy photo<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dianna Duran<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daily-times.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Farmington Daily Times<\/a> has recently\u00a0done\u00a0some solid reporting to expose\u00a0lax enforcement of New Mexico\u00a0campaign finance reporting laws.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, the newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daily-times.com\/four_corners-news\/ci_28220889\/number-campaign-finance-violations-secretary-state-has-referred\" target=\"_blank\">reported Saturday<\/a> that the number of violations Secretary of State Dianna Duran has referred to the attorney general\u00a0for possible prosecution remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Duran and Attorney General Hector Balderas announced the creation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daily-times.com\/four_corners-news\/ci_27570859\/state-officials-pledge-effort-oversee-campaign-finances\" target=\"_blank\">a task force<\/a> in late February charged with helping improve\u00a0campaign finance\u00a0reporting oversight.<\/p>\n<p>The context, from\u00a0the newspaper:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In early February, The Daily Times reported that during the 2012 and 2014 primary and general elections, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daily-times.com\/four_corners-news\/ci_27478791\/new-mexico-secretary-states-office-collect-few-fines\" target=\"_blank\">Duran had collected only 4 percent of the nearly 2,000 fines her office had assessed<\/a>. The Daily Times reported that she waived 34 percent of the other fines, while failing to collect another 62 percent.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Daily Times analysis, 14 candidates had filed 10 or more campaign finance reports late during the election cycles, and there were many other repeat offenders.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Violations of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.state.nm.us\/uploads\/FileLinks\/ca39fa62c82b4aa18c995f8740bcce9e\/2009CampaignPractices.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Campaign Reporting Act<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.state.nm.us\/candidate_and_pac_information\/campaign_finance_reporting.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">related laws<\/a>, including filing reports that list donors and expenses late,\u00a0are generally misdemeanors.
