{"id":558,"date":"2006-09-08T16:57:00","date_gmt":"2006-09-08T22:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/09\/cano-garcia-recalled-as-gifted-determined-humble\/"},"modified":"2006-09-08T16:57:00","modified_gmt":"2006-09-08T22:57:00","slug":"cano-garcia-recalled-as-gifted-determined-humble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/09\/cano-garcia-recalled-as-gifted-determined-humble\/","title":{"rendered":"Cano-Garcia recalled as gifted, determined, humble"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/cano-garcia%2C%20silvia.3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/cano-garcia%2C%20silvia.3.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>District Attorney Susana Martinez was among many who wept as they read Bible passages or gave eulogies Friday during a service for District Judge Silvia Cano-Garcia, who died Monday after a long battle with cancer.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSo many of us look back on our lives and wonder, \u2018have I made a difference?\u2019 We wonder if we are dedicating our energies and the talents God gave each of us to what really matters. For Silvia, there is no doubt,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cShe did make a difference. She was devoted as a daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend. She served her community with passion, eloquence and excellence. Let her life and legacy serve as reminders that we are here on this earth for the blink of an eye, and during that time we must love and serve each other with all our hearts and leave the world a richer place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many spoke at the service about Cano-Garcia as tireless, devoted, determined, gifted and humble. Her sister Karin Cano talked about her accomplishments as a pianist, artist, carpenter, cook, Bible teacher and fisherwoman, in addition to her accomplishments as a lawyer and judge, and also pointed out that Cano-Garcia earned three bachelor\u2019s degrees from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> in three years. Most of those accomplishments, her sister said, are things many don\u2019t know about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhile she could have used these things to impress, she didn\u2019t. She was humble,\u201d Cano said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many at the service wore purple ribbons. That was Cano-Garcia\u2019s favorite color, and she was often seen in court wearing a bright purple robe, instead of the traditional black. On the walls of her courtroom hung her own paintings, her sister said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cano spoke of her sister as one who stood out for her creativity and willingness to be unique.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think it\u2019s safe to say that she will make a case with the Almighty for wings that are tie-died,\u201d Cano said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The service was held at <st1:city st=\"on\">St. Paul<\/st1:city>\u2019s <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">United<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Methodist<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Church<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> to accommodate the hundreds in attendance, but officiated by the Rev. Scott A. Ruthven of St. Andrew\u2019s Episcopal Church.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and Cano both recalled the private manner in which Cano-Garcia fought her cancer, but also her determination to overcome it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cShe is an extreme example of strength and courage for us to follow,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cShe was a very brave woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ruthven recalled visiting Cano-Garcia and her family at <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Memorial<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Medical<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Center<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> on Sunday, hours before Cano-Garcia would die, and anointing her and praying with her family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt was the most intimate moment, to be with someone before they enter resurrection,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cano-Garcia\u2019s friend and co-worker in the criminal division, District Judge Stephen Bridgforth, read from Psalm 30: \u201cYou have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O Lord, my God, I will give you thanks forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That was the tone of the entire service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhen you go back to your busy lives,\u201d Cano told those in attendance, \u201creflect on our time here on this earth.
