Bill Richardson successfully secured the release today of Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Paul Salopek and two colleagues following a meeting with Sudanese President Lt. General Umar Hassan Ahmad Al-Bashir.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/RichardsonWatch.19.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/RichardsonWatch.18.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cI am pleased to report that our negotiations were successful, and Paul Salopek will return home to <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state> with me,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> said in a news release. \u201cI want to thank the Sudanese President Lt. General Umar Hassan Ahmad Al-Bashir, who was receptive to my request to release Paul Salopek and his colleagues based on humanitarian grounds.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe successful end to this unfortunate episode is a victory for journalism and a free press,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> said. \u201cMost important, these three men will return home safely to be with their families, friends and colleagues who were relentless in their appeals to have them freed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> traveled with Calvin Humphrey, his foreign policy advisor, to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Khartoum<\/st1:city>, <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> on Friday, where he met with the Sudanese President Lt. General Umar Hassan Ahmad Al-Bashir. He also took with him Salopek\u2019s wife and the editor of the Chicago Tribune.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Salopek was detained on Aug. 6 along with two Chadian citizens, Suleiman Abakar Moussa, Salopeks\u2019s interpreter, and his driver, Abdulraham Anu. All three were charged with espionage, passing information illegally, and writing \u201cfalse news.\u201d  Salopek, who lives in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Columbus<\/st1:city>, <st1:state st=\"on\">N.M.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, is on leave from his job as foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune on a freelance assignment for National Geographic magazine. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
