Cano-Garcia died Monday following a long battle with cancer.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cano-Garcia, who fought for years to stay on the bench while she battled the disease, died about 4 a.m. She was 44.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She is survived by her husband Reynaldo Garcia and their daughter Marisol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe were friends since junior high,\u201d said former Magistrate Judge Susana Chaparro. \u201cShe\u2019s probably one of the most courageous people I\u2019ve met in my whole life. I love her and I\u2019m going to miss my friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cano-Garcia took a leave of absence from the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> court in August and never returned to the bench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cano-Garcia was respected for her professionalism, ethics and passion. She was assigned to the criminal division and presided over many high-profile cases, including the first rape and bribery trial of former Magistrate Judge Reuben Galvan and several cases involving child abuse resulting in death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Robert E. Robles, the presiding judge of the district court in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, also spoke about Cano-Garcia\u2019s courage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cShe was tireless,\u201d he said. \u201cShe fought for the right things. She never gave up, even in the face of adversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cano-Garcia was elected in 2002 and sworn in on Jan. 2, 2003. Former Gov. Gary Johnson had appointed her less than two years earlier to a judgeship on the <st1:street st=\"on\"><st1:address st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a Ana County   Magistrate Court<\/st1:address><\/st1:Street>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As magistrates, she and Chaparro created a domestic violence court modeled after adult and juvenile drug programs. Chaparro traveled around the nation to give presentations about the court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt was the only of its kind in the nation,\u201d Chaparro said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Before becoming a judge, Cano-Garcia worked in the district attorney\u2019s office and in private practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cShe was my friend,\u201d said District Attorney Susana Martinez, who visited Cano-Garcia this weekend. \u201cI was honored to have been a small part of her life. She will be deeply missed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A native New Mexican who was born and raised in Mesilla, she received a bachelor\u2019s degree from <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> in 1982 and a law degree from <st1:placename st=\"on\">American<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:city>, <st1:state st=\"on\">D.C.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> in 1987. She was a Fulbright scholar who studied international relations in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Germany<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> from October 1982 to July 1983. Cano-Garcia was fluent in English, Spanish and German.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">State Rep. Joseph Cervantes attended Zia Middle and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> High schools with Cano-Garcia, and recalled Monday that she had been student body president at Zia. In addition to being skilled in the law, Cervantes said, she was an accomplished pianist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cShe was a person who was full of life,\u201d he said. \u201cIf ever there was a renaissance person, it was Silvia, from languages to music to arts to the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chaparro called Cano-Garcia \u201ctrue to her word and honorable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cFirst and foremost in her mind was her family,\u201d Chaparro said. \u201cHer second love was the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">A prior version of this posting incorrectly stated that Cano-Garcia was appointed to the district judgeship in 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>District Judge Silvia E.
