I wasn\u2019t sure on Jan. 1, 2017 that NMPolitics.net would last the year. This news website is my livelihood. Keeping the lights on is a struggle every month. I knew individual donations to NMPolitics.net would have to increase dramatically in 2017. So we made a plan. We asked you to give.<\/p>\n

And you did!<\/p>\n

NMPolitics.net scraped by financially in 2017 thanks to an outpouring of support from hundreds of people<\/a> across New Mexico and beyond. There\u2019s still work to do, but we\u2019re headed into 2018 on more solid financial footing.<\/p>\n

Your support enabled us to focus on important journalism in 2017. I\u2019m proud of the work we did, which included in-depth projects on Spaceport America<\/a>, the economy in Truth Or Consequences<\/a>, and southern New Mexico\u2019s struggling behavioral health system<\/a>, in addition to the regular news and commentary you expect. One of our most-read posts of the year was a breaking news article<\/a> about a controversial social media post by the chair of the Do\u00f1a Ana County Republican Party. That article generated lots of discussion and ultimately led to his\u00a0resignation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Our efforts to advance the conversation about the future of journalism received national attention in 2017. Columbia Journalism review featured<\/a>\u00a0a training I helped organize with\u00a0the Society of Professional Journalists and the ACLU to equip journalists for encounters with border agents. Poynter\u00a0spotlighted<\/a> our collaborations with other news organizations and my thoughts about where journalism should be headed.<\/p>\n

More important than that recognition is the community you’re helping build. NMPolitics.net is about bringing you quality news and analysis and providing respectful, bridge-building forums that spark discussion and help you plug into a larger conversation about the future of our society. I ask for respect in our forums, and you all really stepped up in 2017. I\u2019m proud that NMPolitics.net sparks a level of civil discourse that\u2019s rare these days.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m passionate about our state. I believe in our collective ability to solve problems when we work together. I believe journalism is key to bettering our society. I\u2019m grateful for your support for and participation in what NMPolitics.net is trying to accomplish.<\/p>\n
