Bill Richardson and Attorney General Patricia Madrid, both Democrats, now finds its way to the doorstep of Republican Lyons, though the donations are smaller than some of those that have haunted the two Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to a weekend article in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freenewmexican.com\/news\/48130.html\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a>, <st1:city st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:city> took $250 from Mike Machenbier of the Four Daughters Ranch in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Valencia<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> in 2004, during a court battle with the Isleta Pueblo over access to a road. Then, between October 2005 and June 2006, he accepted several contributions totaling $4,225.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lyon\u2019s opponent in this year\u2019s election, Democrat Jim Baca, called it an \u201cethical lapse\u201d by <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Baca%2C%20Jim.22.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Baca%2C%20Jim.17.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cThere\u2019s certainly the appearance of a conflict of interest,\u201d Baca told the newspaper. \u201cWhen the state land commissioner enters a case as a friend of the plaintiff while receiving contributions, I think the best thing to do would be to return the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This is one of only two cases in which <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has intervened as land commissioner. Still, he told the newspaper, \u201cThere\u2019s no connection. Mike Mechenbier is a good Republican, a rancher, a hunter and a friend of mine for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mechenbier, one of the largest land owners in the state, told the newspaper the same.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019ve given Pat money before and after,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair to single out one contribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said he supports <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> because both are ranchers, and said he isn\u2019t a fan of Baca.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lyons and Mechenbier said state intervention in the lawsuit was necessary to protect access the pueblo threatened to cut off to state land and land owned by Mechenbier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The New Mexican reported that Mechenbier has a history of political donations, the bulk of them going to Republican candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Since 2004, he has given $2,500 to the Republican National Committee, $6,000 to the GOP (Congressional) Campaign Committee of New Mexico, $5,500 to U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., and $1,000 to U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In state races in 2002, he gave $2,500 to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s Republican opponent for governor and $2,000 to the Republican candidate for attorney general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But he also gave to some Democrats. In fact, in 2002 he gave $1,000 to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019 opponent, Democrat Art Trujillo, while giving only $290 to Lyons, his supposed longtime friend, according to the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As I wrote earlier, these donations are dwarfed by some of the massive and questionable gifts given to <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. But they still raise questions about when it\u2019s appropriate to accept money and when donations should be rejected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> wouldn\u2019t feel the loss of returning the money.
