{"id":4789,"date":"2009-08-06T16:14:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-06T22:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/08\/gonzales-announces-dem-party-chairman-candidacy\/"},"modified":"2009-08-06T16:14:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-06T22:14:00","slug":"gonzales-announces-dem-party-chairman-candidacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/08\/gonzales-announces-dem-party-chairman-candidacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Gonzales announces Dem Party chairman candidacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SntWB_W89XI\/AAAAAAAAMCk\/rZaqyFU-d78\/s1600-h\/Gonzales,+Javier.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 120px; height: 160px;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SntWB_W89XI\/AAAAAAAAMCk\/rZaqyFU-d78\/s200\/Gonzales,+Javier.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366977973129639282\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico State University<\/a> Regent Javier Gonzales confirmed today that he\u2019s seeking the chairmanship of the <a href=\"http:\/\/nmdemocrats.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Party of New Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn consultation with my family and friends, as well as consultation with Democratic Party leaders, I\u2019ve concluded this is an ideal opportunity for me to join with other good Democrats in New Mexico in pushing our progressive agenda forward,\u201d Gonzales said in a statement released this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales is seeking to replace Brian Col\u00f3n, who is expected to <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2009\/08\/colon-to-resign-party-chairmanship-on.html\">announce his resignation<\/a> on Friday and run for lieutenant governor. Gonzales had previously been saying he was <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2009\/04\/nmsu-regent-may-run-for-lieutenant.html\">considering running for lieutenant governor<\/a>, but his new statement appears to put an end to any talk of that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019ve long searched for where I can best serve New Mexico, and I believe I\u2019ve found the right place where I can best serve all New Mexicans,\u201d he said of the party chairmanship. \u201cMy fundamental belief is that our Democratic Party values are the most aligned with the values of working families in New Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales is a former Santa Fe County commissioner and former president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Counties<\/a>. He has served on a number of boards in New Mexico including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhccnm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Hispanic Cultural Center<\/a> Foundation board, and was a member of the board of regents at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. until the governor appointed him to the NMSU board in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the early 1990s, Gonzales cofounded La Voz Broadcasting, New Mexico\u2019s largest privately-owned Spanish language radio station. In 2003, he founded IronStone Consulting to help companies work with local governments. He currently works for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santafestudios.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Fe Studios<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least one other man is seeking the party\u2019s chairmanship &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandovaldemocrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sandoval County Democratic Party<\/a> Chairman David Montoya. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/michaelrayhuerta\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Ray Huerta<\/a> of Las Cruces is being urged by some to run but hasn\u2019t said whether he will do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The party plans to hold a meeting in September or October to vote on a new chair.
