\"\"<\/a>The Democratic National Committee is expected to insert Nevada<\/st1:state>\u2019s caucuses between Iowa<\/st1:state>\u2019s and the New Hampshire<\/st1:state> primary when it adopts its 2008 primary and caucus calendar Saturday in Chicago<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>. <\/p>\n

Gov. Bill Richardson defended that proposal in Iowa<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> Thursday, according to the Des Moines Register<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThe path to the presidency is through Iowa<\/st1:state> and New Hampshire<\/st1:state>,\u201d Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> told the newspaper. \u201cI don\u2019t see Nevada<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>\u2019s entrance in between, a caucus in a small western state, as going to affect either one.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The issue was contentious during a recent Richardson<\/st1:city> visit to New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. He is one of the backers of the Nevada<\/st1:state> proposal, designed to raise the status of the west, but, at the same time, has worked hard to convince Iowa<\/st1:state> and New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> they won\u2019t be harmed.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:city> was in Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> to join a group pressuring Wal-Mart on salaries and benefits, and to campaign for the state\u2019s Democratic gubernatorial candidate.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> secretary of state has said he would move the first-in-the-nation primary ahead of the DNC calendar if he believes the calendar diminishes it. Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> promised to participate there and oppose sanctions by the DNC against the state party if that happened.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

In Iowa<\/st1:state> Thursday, Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said he will compete in the state\u2019s caucuses if he decides to run for president.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be my intention to participate here,\u201d he told the newspaper.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

As for whether he\u2019ll run for president, Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> continued to insist he has not decided.<\/p>\n
