It\u2019s a job that instead went to former U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doi.gov\/welcome.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Salazar<\/a>, D-Colo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Madrid, a Democrat who is originally from Las Cruces, became the first woman elected to be a district court judge in New Mexico in 1978 when she won a judgeship in Albuquerque. In 1998, she was elected attorney general, and she won re-election in 2002.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In 2006, Madrid ran against then-U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heather_Wilson\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M., but lost by fewer than 1,000 votes out of about 211,000 cast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Since 2007, Madrid has worked as a consultant to <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/madrid-takes-consulting-job-also.html\">a high-powered Washington law firm<\/a> that represents some of the companies she took to court on behalf of New Mexico\u2019s citizens as AG. Madrid has also said she may run for governor in 2010, but few expect that to happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The current land commissioner, Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmstatelands.org\/default.aspx?PageID=2\" target=\"_blank\">Pat Lyons<\/a>, is term-limited from seeking re-election and is instead running for a spot on the Public Regulation Commission next year.
