Gov. and 2010 gubernatorial candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dianedenish.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Denish<\/a> said recently that she and her office have \u201cnot been part of\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2009\/07\/after-gops-attack-denish-unveils-ethics.html\">any corruption scandals<\/a> plaguing state government. Now the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">state GOP<\/a> is trying to link the Democrat to pay to play in a new TV ad that is airing beginning today &#8212; about 16 months before the general election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In an ad that uses a slot machine as its prop, the narrator says this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe Richardson Denish game. Big money donor needs a favor. Gives campaign cash. Pay-to-play jackpot. Now Diane Denish claims she doesn\u2019t play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cReally? Let\u2019s take that for a spin. Denish used to say gambling was bad for the economy. Then casino owners gave big. Diane Denish cast the tiebreaking vote to expand gambling twice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAnother pay to play jackpot. No matter how Diane Denish spins it, isn\u2019t it still the same game?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad claims casino owners gave \u201c$200,000+\u201d to Richardson and Denish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad was first reported on by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.krqe.com\/dpp\/news\/politics\/politics_krqe_albuquerque_2010_ad_hits_the_airwaves_200907122149\" target=\"_blank\">KRQE-TV<\/a> in Albuquerque. <a href=\"http:\/\/nmdemocrats.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">State Democratic Party<\/a> Chairman Brian Col\u00f3n said this in a statement to KRQE: \u201cThe Republican Party of New Mexico is already desperately beginning the negative attacks that often come from a party running scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">You can watch the ad right here:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><object width=\"420\" height=\"340\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Ctd1QKr5O2Q&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Ctd1QKr5O2Q&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"420\" height=\"340\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 10:55 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Josh Geise, executive director of the state Democratic Party, claimed in an e-mail that the GOP hasn\u2019t purchased any ad time on network television and has bought only $4,000 of ad time on cable television. Geise said the attack on Denish is \u201ca video press release at best,\u201d not a television advertisement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ve e-mailed the state GOP spokeswoman for comment but not yet received a response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 12:35 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This from state GOP spokeswoman Janel Causey:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe info that the Dems are relying on is old.  As we initially planned, we will be adding to this buy throughout the week &#8212; including network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt is noteworthy that the Democrats want to spin this issue by talking about the buy rather than addressing the substance of the commercial. The pertinent issue at hand is did Denish benefit from campaign contributions from the gambling casino industry (yes) and Denish cast these votes (yes).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Other than that, Causey released no information about the media buy other than to say in a news release that the ad is running statewide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 1:10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In an e-mail from her campaign, Denish didn\u2019t respond to the substance of the GOP attack ad, but she did have this to say:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m not surprised that rather than trying to rebuild their devastated party around new ideas, or plans to help get us out of the ditch that President Bush put us in, Republicans have gone negative and personal on me &#8212; first in the press, now on TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI can understand why Republicans wouldn\u2019t want to talk about how I\u2019ve actually been an advocate for greater transparency in government throughout my own career. Or why they\u2019d ignore <a href=\"http:\/\/salsa.wiredforchange.com\/dia\/track.jsp?v=2&amp;c=m24CRoKW%2FEqilXcvyy%2BlDoWwHFoyAaVh\" target=\"_blank\">my plan for an open, honest state government<\/a> that would help make New Mexico\u2019s government more responsive to average citizens. Or why they\u2019d fail to notice that I&#8217;m leading the way by personally disclosing my campaign finances way more than the law allows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAnd I can understand why they don\u2019t want to talk about why I\u2019ve got a plan to help New Mexico be ready to compete in the 21st Century economy, with a real commitment to education and real opportunity in every corner of the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhat surprises me is that they\u2019ve started the desperation tactics so early. It\u2019s clear that they want to make every last minute of the sixteen months between now and election day 2010 a mudfight.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">A prior version of this posting incorrectly identified Geise as the party&#8217;s chairman.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article has been updated.
