{"id":470,"date":"2006-08-16T08:33:00","date_gmt":"2006-08-16T14:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/08\/republicans-others-attack-democratic-ad-they-say-lumps-immigrants-in-with-terrorists\/"},"modified":"2006-08-16T08:33:00","modified_gmt":"2006-08-16T14:33:00","slug":"republicans-others-attack-democratic-ad-they-say-lumps-immigrants-in-with-terrorists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/08\/republicans-others-attack-democratic-ad-they-say-lumps-immigrants-in-with-terrorists\/","title":{"rendered":"Republicans, others attack Democratic ad they say lumps immigrants in with terrorists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Republican Hispanics and others are blasting a Democratic group for a political ad they say unfairly compares Hispanic immigrants to terrorists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee ran an ad on its Web site that shows footage of two apparently undocumented immigrants scaling a border fence, along with images of Osama Bin Laden and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">North Korea<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>\u2019s leader, according to an Associated Press article that you can read via the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/aprepad08-15-06.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pedro Celis, chairman of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly, called the ad \u201cappalling\u201d and said the Democratic group should remove it, according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Republicans aren\u2019t the only ones upset. A Democratic city councilwoman from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Houston<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> is among those calling for the ad to be removed from the group\u2019s Web site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">La Raza is upset, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cThis is the same kind of fear mongering we condemn in the extreme media and now we are seeing it at the DSCC,\u201d Lisa Navarrete, spokeswoman for the National Council of La Raza, told the Associated Press. \u201cIt\u2019s appalling.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I can\u2019t find the ad on the group\u2019s site, so they may have already removed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad opens with the words \u201cSecurity Under Bush and GOP?\u201d and shows scenes of a masked man with a bazooka, terrorist attacks, police inspecting a subway car, and terrorist leaders, according to the Associated Press, and it claims \u201c4 times as many terrorist attacks in 2005.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Then it shows two people climbing a border fence and displays the words \u201cmillions more illegal immigrants,\u201d followed by the words \u201c<st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">North Korea<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> has quadrupled its nuclear arsenal\u201d with footage of that nation\u2019s leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cThe faces of the people climbing over the fence are not clearly visible and there is nothing in the ad confirming the people in the ad are Hispanic,\u201d the Associated Press reported. \u201cSuch scenes are often captured in footage of the U.S.-Mexican border.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad ends with the words, \u201cFeel safer? Vote for change,\u201d according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cEquating these undocumented migrants to the very real threats of terrorism is inexcusable and only serves to fan the flames of anti-immigrant sentiment in our country,\u201d Celis said in the statement to the Associated Press.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">The Democratic group\u2019s spokesman, Phil Singer, dismissed criticism as a Republican group \u201ctrying to gloss over the White House\u2019s abysmal record on security,\u201d according to the Associated Press. \u201cThis group\u2019s time would be better spent pressuring reluctant Republicans to support comprehensive immigration reform.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Hispanics and others are blasting a Democratic group for a political ad they say unfairly compares Hispanic immigrants to terrorists.
