Bill Richardson is one of four potential Democratic presidential candidates who will be in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> this week to join a union-based group that\u2019s trying to pressure <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walmart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wal-Mart<\/a> to offer higher wages and better benefits.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freenewmexican.com\/news\/47938.html#.com\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a>, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> will be participating in events organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wakeupwalmart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wake Up Wal-Mart<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The group is planning to visit 19 states in 35 days, according to the article, which was posted on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freenewmexican.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Fe New Mexican\u2019s<\/a> Web site. The tour will be in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> through the weekend and in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The group claims Wal-Mart\u2019s low wages and poor benefits equal government subsidies, because its workers are eligible for programs that include Medicaid and food stamps. Wal-Mart disputes the claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Also participating in events in Iowa are that state\u2019s governor, Tom Vilsack, Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del. Vilsack and Richardson will hold a town hall meeting Thursday in Waterloo, the Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, also a Democrat, has participated in the group\u2019s events in other states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">***<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Update, 9 a.m.<\/span> According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/484178nm08-16-06.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> also plans to campaign for a gubernatorial candidate in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> and attend the Iowa State Fair. And he plans to have it both ways on Wal-Mart: His campaign says Wal-Mart has taken the appropriate stance on the environment and has put a lot of money into <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>\u2019s economy, but <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> wants to encourage all employers to provide health insurance to employees and pay a living wage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Not so fast, says Wal-Mart, which told the Journal that it will share the truth with its workers because \u201cWe want to make sure they\u2019re informed across <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and other key states that the candidates aren\u2019t telling the truth about Wal-Mart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
