{"id":4616,"date":"2009-06-02T10:18:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-02T16:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/06\/sanchezs-facebook-message-reveals-new-reality\/"},"modified":"2009-06-02T10:18:00","modified_gmt":"2009-06-02T16:18:00","slug":"sanchezs-facebook-message-reveals-new-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/06\/sanchezs-facebook-message-reveals-new-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanchez&#8217;s Facebook message reveals new reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SiVWt5IxSoI\/AAAAAAAALs0\/twTmsnydLQ4\/s1600-h\/Sanchez1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SiVWt5IxSoI\/AAAAAAAALs0\/twTmsnydLQ4\/s1600\/Sanchez1.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342771879376669314\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">I <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/sanchez-says-hes-formed-guv-exploratory.html\">raised questions<\/a> yesterday about why Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SSANC\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Sanchez<\/a> was bypassing the traditional media and announcing that he\u2019s formed an exploratory committee for a potential 2010 gubernatorial run <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Michael-S-Sanchez\/25908359236?ref=nf\" target=\"_blank\">via Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">The Santa Fe New Mexican\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/Local%20News\/Michael-Sanchez-mulls-run-for-governor\" target=\"_blank\">Kate Nash<\/a> does a great job today of piecing together what Sanchez\u2019s brief Facebook note resulted in, despite the fact that there was no accompanying effort to reach the traditional media. Check it out:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSanchez or his campaign over the weekend posted a 13-word status update on his page on the popular social networking site announcing the committee, and the word was out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlbuquerque radio reporter Peter St. Cyr noticed the post, and put in <a href=\"http:\/\/wordcab.blogspot.com\/2009\/05\/senate-majority-leader-sanchez.html\" target=\"_blank\">on his blog<\/a>, then on <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Peter770\/status\/1981516245\" target=\"_blank\">his Twitter page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlogger Matthew Reichbach promptly <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/fbihop\/status\/1981981869\" target=\"_blank\">retweeted<\/a> &#8212; that is, he posted a Twitter update referencing St. Cyr\u2019s tweet &#8212; on his own Twitter page. Other blogs followed suit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWelcome to the 2010 campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Reichbach, a colleague of mine at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmexicoindependent.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico Independent<\/a> and the state\u2019s expert on social networking, has a new posting up <a href=\"http:\/\/nmfbihop.com\/diary\/2899\/social-media-changes-how-campaigns-get-the-word-out-now\" target=\"_blank\">on his blog<\/a> that captures what\u2019s going on:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNew Mexico is slowly catching up to other states in this regard. Ultra-conservative Florida Republican Marco Rubio <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tboblogs.com\/index.php\/news\/story\/rubio-announces-on-twitter-facebook-univision\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Univision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNow-President Barack Obama famously announced (or <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.abcnews.com\/politicalpunch\/2008\/08\/us-secret-servi.html\" target=\"_blank\">tried to anyway<\/a>) his Vice Presidential candidate with <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/BarackObama\/status\/896373763\" target=\"_blank\">this Twitter message<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c\u2018Announcing Senator Joe Biden as our VP nominee. Watch the first Obama-Biden rally live at 3pm ET on <a href=\"http:\/\/barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/BarackObama.com<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">In the newest instance, Sanchez completely bypassed the traditional media and still got the word out. That\u2019s indicative of how the traditional media has lost some of the influence it once had. It\u2019s no longer the filter through which everyone has to go to reach people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">The traditional media still plays a critical role. Many people know about Sanchez\u2019s exploratory committee because they read about it in The New Mexican or another newspaper. But, rather than trying to convince the traditional media to write about his potential gubernatorial run, Sanchez has the media clamoring to write about his Facebook stunt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s just another example of how the Internet is changing our lives by turning the societal structure we once considered reality on its head.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">So this seems an opportune time to bring up my own social networking pages.
