The article, which has now won three awards, told the story of Luz Skywalker and Zach Eason, a multi-ethnic Las Cruces couple, and their daughter Luna. The reporters placed the family in a larger context with statistics and other information, with the 2016 election as a backdrop.<\/p><\/div>\n

An article NMPolitics.net and the Las Cruces Sun-News produced last year\u00a0about how a\u00a0multi-ethnic family is\u00a0working to make ends meet and get along in a complicated world has won another award.<\/p>\n

The article,\u00a0\u201cMillennials like this mixed-ethnicity couple are reshaping America,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0won\u00a0first place in the feature\u00a0writing category of the\u00a0New Mexico Press Association\u2019s<\/a> 2017 Better Newspaper Contest.\u00a0Damien Willis wrote the\u00a0article and Robin Zielinski created a video report and photos to accompany it.<\/p>\n

The award was announced\u00a0Saturday during the annual NMPA\u00a0convention at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa\u00a0north of Albuquerque.<\/p>\n

A competition judge wrote that Willis’ article was “very well written” and “really tackles” complex issues around race. The article beat submissions from the Albuquerque Journal and other newspapers with a circulation\u00a0above 11,000 in New Mexico\u00a0for the first-place award — and the reason, the judge wrote, was that “the writing was excellent.”<\/p>\n

Willis\u00a0and Zielinski told the story of\u00a0Luz Skywalker and Zach Eason, a multi-ethnic Las Cruces couple, and their daughter Luna. They placed the\u00a0family in a larger context with statistics and other information, with the 2016 election as a backdrop.<\/p>\n

This is the\u00a0third\u00a0award the story has won. Earlier this year it won a national award — second\u00a0place in the feature story category of the\u00a0National Federation of Press Women\u2019s\u00a02017\u00a0competition<\/a>.\u00a0It also\u00a0won\u00a0first place for feature writing\u00a0in the New Mexico Press Women’s annual competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The article\u00a0was part of a collaboration\u00a0between NMPolitics.net and\u00a0the Sun-News to tell stories about\u00a0multi-ethnic families in New Mexico as a way to bridge our understanding of one another. The\u00a0second article<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0the series<\/a>\u00a0told the story of a Las Cruces mother who makes sense of tragedy by doing\u00a0stand-up comedy. The project was funded with help from the\u00a0Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance<\/a>.<\/p>\n
