Before he moved to Colorado<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> in the 1970s, Lynn Ellins was what you might call a \u201cRockefeller Republican<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

In general, that means one who espoused the more liberal views of Republican Nelson Rockefeller, the former governor of New York<\/st1:state> and United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> vice president.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

But when Ellins moved from New York<\/st1:state> to Colorado<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, he found he was \u201cabout as far left a Republican as you can be\u201d in the more conservative state.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Ellins, now 69, changed his party registration in 2000.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThis was not the Republican Party that I signed up for many years ago,\u201d he said. \u201cMy heart was not with it. It was with the other side.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Ellins knows he\u2019s going to have to put politics aside now that he\u2019s been hired to run the November election for Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> Ana<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>. To avoid a conflict of interest, Ellins said he will step down from his position as co-chair of the county\u2019s elections task force before it begins deliberations on final recommendations to the county commission. Because he and other task force members have agreed they won\u2019t share their work with the media until their report is issued, Ellins said he can\u2019t yet discuss specific changes he will make as elections supervisor.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are some things that we have looked at that I will probably implement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Ellins is optimistic about the election.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cTo say that we will succeed 100 percent without any problems would be Pollyannaish,\u201d Ellins said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to give it 100 percent. We\u2019ll be as transparent as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Ellins also pledged to give equal access to all, regardless of party affiliation, and to work with everyone.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

He and the other task force members have spent time interviewing each staffer in the elections bureau, and Ellins said he is impressed.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to succeed. They have a great staff,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are lots of good people there.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

As a man who volunteers a lot of time with Common Cause, Ellins has demonstrated that he values good government above any political party. He is an attorney with an understanding of the law. He has spent time in the past few weeks learning the intimate details of the elections bureau. And he was an elected member of the University of Colorado Board of Regents, so he\u2019s seen that side of an election.<\/p>\n
