Approve reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Following the <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2009\/05\/smith-embarrassed-by-scandal-i-would-be.html\">recent outrage<\/a> expressed by some legislative leaders at the many scandals plaguing <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/site\/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&amp;b=4847593\" target=\"_blank\">Common Cause<\/a> is making a renewed push for ethics reform.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe leadership of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/lfc\/lfcdefault.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Legislative Finance Committee<\/a> recently stated that they\u2019re tired of all the scandals in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and that there\u2019s a need for additional oversight of state institutions,\u201d Steven Robert Allen, Common Cause executive director, said in a news release. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t agree more, and look forward to working &#8212; in a serious and concerted manner &#8212; with legislative leadership to address these concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn particular,\u201d the release states, \u201c<st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is still one of only a few states with no independent ethics commission to investigate allegations of wrongdoing by public officials. Likewise, <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> needs to take big money out of the political equation entirely by expanding public campaign financing to offices such as governor and attorney general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">More from the release:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><p>\u201cAn independent bipartisan ethics commission is the single best way to provide reliable objective oversight of state agencies. Likewise, private campaign contributions could very well be viewed as a hidden tax, a cost of doing business with the state that\u2019s ultimately passed on to the consumer &#8212; that is, the citizens of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. We need public campaign financing in our state, because taxpayers are essentially already funding campaigns. With private financing, the business or individual making the contribution gets the access, while the cost of the contribution is passed on to the taxpayer.
