Today there are lots of reasons in our state and nation to feel cynical. Our system is a divided, dysfunctional mess. It\u2019s structured in a way that gives some people advantages based on factors including socioeconomic status, gender, race and ethnicity, and sexual orientation.<\/p>\n

Lots of people across the ideological spectrum feel like our system isn\u2019t serving them. Maybe you\u2019re among them. I certainly am at times.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t have to be that way. There\u2019s lots of room for improvement. And it\u2019s up to us to make it happen.<\/p>\n

I choose to believe we can change the system. I choose hope.<\/p>\n

As I wrote in my column announcing NMPolitics.net\u2019s return<\/a>, I believe we\u2019re best when we work together, and I want to help pull New Mexico in that direction. I\u2019m a native New Mexican. I\u2019m raising my daughter here. I\u2019m committed to helping better this state.<\/p>\n

Yes,\u00a0voter turnout is at an all-time low. Yes, New Mexico is at the bottom of most of the important lists. Yes, New Mexico in many ways remains stuck, as it has for decades through the tenures of Democratic and Republican governors, and in spite of various efforts to improve quality of life that came from across the ideological spectrum.<\/p>\n

In spite of that, I believe we can create a more empowering system that better serves all of us. But we have to work together.<\/p>\n
