{"id":4497,"date":"2009-04-27T11:30:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-27T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/04\/owner-of-lc-bulletin-buys-rio-rancho-newspaper\/"},"modified":"2009-04-27T11:30:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-27T17:30:00","slug":"owner-of-lc-bulletin-buys-rio-rancho-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/04\/owner-of-lc-bulletin-buys-rio-rancho-newspaper\/","title":{"rendered":"Owner of LC Bulletin buys Rio Rancho newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ve written a lot lately about the struggles daily newspapers are facing, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2009\/04\/las-cruces-sun-news-eliminates-more.html\">layoffs and furloughs<\/a> that have hit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a>, which is undergoing a major restructuring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, the other major Las Cruces newspaper &#8212; the weekly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lascrucesbulletin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Bulletin<\/a> &#8212; appears to be doing just fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Not only has the Bulletin added several positions in the last few months, but the company that owns the Bulletin, the locally based FIG Publications, is in the process of purchasing the weekly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer-online.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rio Rancho Observer<\/a>, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer-online.com\/articles\/2009\/04\/22\/news\/breaking_news\/doc49ed127a09110204226454.txt\" target=\"_blank\">an article<\/a> on the Rio Rancho paper\u2019s Web site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s quite an investment for a small, Las Cruces-based company that previously didn\u2019t own any publications other than the Bulletin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition to taking over the Observer, FIG Publications will take over the Kirtland Air Force Base Nucleus, the newspaper for the military base, the Observer reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">FIG Publications is purchasing the newspapers from the Arizona Company Wick Communications. The change will take place on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI am sincerely pleased and honored to work with Wick Communications on adding The Rio Rancho Observer as our first publication outside the Las Cruces Bulletin,\u201d FIG Publications Chief Operations Officer David McCollum, who also is the publisher of the Bulletin, was quoted by the Observer as saying. \u201cI truly believe a community\u2019s hometown newspaper is at the heart of the community, and the Rio Rancho Observer is as old as the community itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCollum said he his \u201cthrilled\u201d by the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe City of Rio Rancho is truly a city of vision, and I think that vision is bright despite the current economic challenges,\u201d the Observer quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve written a lot lately about the struggles daily newspapers are facing, including the layoffs and furloughs that have hit the Las Cruces Sun-News, which is undergoing a major restructuring.
