The state opted to invest $20 million with Quadrangle. And it also includes, according to Bloomberg, $50,381 from Leo Hindery, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intermediaadvisors.com\/main.cfm?actionId=globalShowStaticContent&amp;screenKey=cmpContact&amp;s=interMedia\" target=\"_blank\">InterMedia Advisors LLC<\/a>. The state opted to invest $30 million with InterMedia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere\u2019s an appearance of pay-to-play,\u201d Bloomberg qouted Steven Robert Allen, executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/site\/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&amp;b=4847593\" target=\"_blank\">Common Cause New Mexico<\/a>, as saying about the campaign contributions. \u201cWhether there\u2019s a quid pro quo or not, it raises questions in people\u2019s minds, and that\u2019s not good for a democracy to have those sorts of questions being raised about the most powerful elected official in our state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">To top it off, <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2009\/04\/more-on-nm-connection-to-ny-investment.html\">I\u2019ve already written about<\/a> ties between some New Mexico investment deals and Hank Morris, who is under indictment in New York for soliciting kickbacks in exchange for business with that state\u2019s pension fund. What I haven\u2019t reported is that Morris\u2019 political consulting firm, Morris Carrick &amp; Guma, gave $52,972 to the <a href=\"http:\/\/nmdemocrats.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Party of New Mexico<\/a> in February 2001, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here\u2019s what New Mexico\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sic.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">State Investment Council<\/a> had to say to Bloomberg:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cCampaign contributions should not and do not play any role whatsoever in investments made by the State Investment Council,\u201d spokesman Charles Wollman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bloomberg was working off <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haussamen.com\/PlacementAgentData.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a list of 42 brokers<\/a> released by the SIC. According to the news organization, nine of those brokers contributed to Richardson campaigns and PACs. Two of them, Guy Riordan and Alfred Jackson, were officers in one of Richardson\u2019s PACs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">This article has been updated for clarity.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
