Though a bill <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2009\/03\/legislature-oks-open-conference.html\">approved earlier this week<\/a> that would require open conference committees hasn\u2019t been acted on by the governor and, even if it had been, wouldn\u2019t take effect for months, lawmakers are voluntarily opening to the public a conference committee that\u2019s about to be held on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?Chamber=S&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=584&amp;year=09\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 584<\/a>, sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SORTI\" target=\"_blank\">Gerald Ortiz y Pino<\/a>, D-Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt might be a historical event,\u201d Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SSMIT\" target=\"_blank\">John Arthur Smith<\/a>, D-Deming, said moments ago in announcing the open meeting on the Senate floor. Smith has always opposed opening conference committees to the public in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The meeting is about to be held in Room 322 at the Roundhouse. At least two journalists are on their way to the meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Ortiz y Pino bill would allow the issuance of state bonds for renewable energy transmission and storage projects. I\u2019m not sure right now what the dispute between the House and Senate is about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 11:10 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This conference committee is over. I\u2019m not in Santa Fe, so I can\u2019t yet tell you what happened. Legislative leaders just appointed members to a second conference committee &#8212; on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?Chamber=S&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=201&amp;year=09\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 201<\/a>, sponsored by Bernadette Sanchez, D-Albuquerque &#8212; but did not announce that this one would be open to the public.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article has been updated.
