\"\"<\/a>The Senate Rules Committee<\/a> gave a do-pass recommendation this morning to a bill that would open conference committees and other legislative meetings to the public. With a similar bill already on the calendar for today\u2019s Senate floor session, what happens next isn\u2019t clear.<\/p>\n

House Bill 393<\/a>, sponsored by Rep. Joseph Cervantes<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, was approved by the committee on a vote of 3-2 with Majority Leader Michael Sanchez<\/a>, D-Belen, Committee Chair Linda Lopez<\/a>, D-Albuquerque and Dianna Duran<\/a>, R-Tularosa, voting for it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Voting against the bill were Senate President Pro Tem Tim Jennings<\/a>, D-Roswell, and Minority Leader Stuart Ingle<\/a>, R-Portales.<\/p>\n

While Duran has voted to open conference committees in the past, Sanchez twice voted against the proposal in 2007. Lopez voted against it once that year and was absent for the second vote.<\/p>\n

Cervantes said during today\u2019s committee meeting, before the vote, that he was hoping for luck on St. Patrick\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tradition is to kiss the blarney stone, and I\u2019m prepared to kiss just about anything,\u201d he was quoted as saying by The Santa Fe New Mexican\u2019s Kate Nash<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cervantes\u2019 bill is scheduled to head to the Senate Judiciary Committee<\/a>. A mirror of Cervantes\u2019 bill, Senate Bill 737<\/a>, sponsored by Dede Feldman<\/a>, D-Albuquerque, is No. 6 on today\u2019s Senate floor calendar, which is controlled by Sanchez, so what happens next on the conference committee proposal isn\u2019t clear. Either bill could move forward, but the movement on Cervantes\u2019 bill, when there\u2019s another, identical bill already on the Senate floor, might indicate that Sanchez wants the Cervantes bill, instead of the Feldman bill, to move forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
