Our political system encourages us to label ourselves. Sometimes it&#8217;s to identify\u00a0trends and patterns.\u00a0Sometimes it&#8217;s to build a team.<\/p>\n<p>Other times it to vilify opponents:<\/p>\n<p><em>Don&#8217;t support her. She&#8217;s a socialist. A communist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He&#8217;s\u00a0just a teabagger. A fascist. Don&#8217;t vote for him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Recent conversations NMPolitics.net facilitated on Facebook reveal that political\u00a0labels may at times be accurate, but they&#8217;re often incomplete\u00a0&#8212; at best.<\/p>\n<p>Bev Courtney of Las Cruces, for example, is\u00a0a Republican. But when asked how to\u00a0identify her, Courtney requested\u00a0a nuanced description. She didn&#8217;t want to be associated with the &#8220;greed&#8221; of Republicans who &#8220;go along with cheap labor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"module align-left half type-aside\">\n<h3>Join the discussion about labels:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/haussamen\/posts\/10100777626562421\" target=\"_blank\">Heath Haussamen&#8217;s Facebook page<\/a><\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nmpolitics\/posts\/833009343401458\" target=\"_blank\">NMPolitics.net&#8217;s Facebook page<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Courtney, who is involved in the local tea party, says she agrees with the GOP platform that includes &#8220;pro-life and traditional marriage.&#8221; But\u00a0she takes issue with &#8220;upper-elite Republicans&#8221; who ignore the party platform &#8220;when it interferes with their agenda.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She cited Republicans who\u00a0support &#8220;amnesty&#8221; for people she labels\u00a0&#8220;illegals&#8221; as an example.<\/p>\n<p>(NMPolitics.net chooses to identify those Courtney calls &#8220;illegals&#8221; as &#8220;people as living in the United States without legal status&#8221; to avoid editorializing.)<\/p>\n<p>Mike Johnson of Santa Fe identifies as a conservative Democrat. Here&#8217;s how he elaborated on Facebook:\u00a0&#8220;fiscal conservative, anti-big government, pro-business, anti-war, socially very liberal, some ideas would scare most liberals I suspect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I vote for and support more Democrats than GOP, but feel I am not very welcome in most Democratic Party circles since I tend to speak out about how elected Democrats are operating,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;I am critical of creating more rules, regulations and taxes on businesses and individual freedoms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>If understood, labels can help<\/h3>\n<p>While some use political labels to divide,\u00a0Johnson embraces their use, calling labels time-savers that help people with differing beliefs communicate.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t believe you can change or alter anyone&#8217;s deeply, long-held beliefs by debating or discussing issues,&#8221; Johnson wrote on Facebook. &#8220;And so I would prefer not to waste time on trying. Therefore, knowing where you are coming from to begin with is useful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps labels can be a useful starting point as long as those having a\u00a0conversation understand what they mean.\u00a0Often people do:\u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/political-labels-majorities-of-us-adults-have-a-sense-of-what-conservative-liberal-right-wing-or-left-wing-means-but-many-do-not-54020207.html\" target=\"_blank\">2005 Harris poll<\/a> found that the majority of Americans &#8220;understand these labels in pretty much the same way political pundits do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Large majorities believe that conservatives favor\u00a0moral values, cutting taxes, and oppose same-sex marriage, gay rights, and\u00a0abortion rights,&#8221; Harris wrote in a memo about the decade-old poll. &#8220;Majorities believe liberals favor abortion rights, gay\u00a0rights, same-sex marriages, and affirmative action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But many didn&#8217;t\u00a0understand. The Harris poll found that &#8220;substantial numbers of\u00a0people don&#8217;t know where conservatives and liberals stand on those and other\u00a0issues. &#8230; And some people seem to completely misunderstand these labels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In those instances, labels can be barriers to communication because they don&#8217;t help us understand each other.<\/p>\n<h3>We&#8217;re complicated<\/h3>\n<p>Labeling is complicated.\u00a0Just look at the dozens of political ideologies people have attempted to list and describe <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_political_ideologies\" target=\"_blank\">on Wikipedia<\/a>. Pew Research Center in 2014 attempted to make sense of\u00a0Americans by sorting us\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2014\/06\/26\/the-political-typology-beyond-red-vs-blue\/\" target=\"_blank\">into eight ideological groups<\/a>: Steadfast conservatives, business conservatives, solid liberals, young outsiders, hard-pressed skeptics, next generation left, faith-and-family left, and bystanders.<\/p>\n<p>But you&#8217;ll have to spend some time studying\u00a0to understand those groupings. And while\u00a0they&#8217;re nuanced, those labels\u00a0sometimes fall short, just like\u00a0our system that encourages people to register as Democrats or Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Take\u00a0Lucas Herndon of Las Cruces, who described himself on Facebook as a &#8220;Humanist observant progressive worldly non-absolutist.&#8221; He recently decided to register as a Democrat, he says, because &#8220;New Mexico\u00a0is a dumb two-party state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Only people registered to vote with a certain political party can vote in that party&#8217;s primary in\u00a0our state&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Closed_primary\" target=\"_blank\">closed primary system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Michael Swickard of Las Cruces described himself this way: &#8220;Aggravates both Democrats and Republicans, but since he had to have one card to vote in June, he is now an R. Neither political party wants him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Steve Grocki of Taos, a city where\u00a0Republicans are scarce, says he&#8217;s a registered Democrat because Democratic primaries often decide elections. Grocki\u00a0wants his vote to count. &#8220;It&#8217;s a tactical thing,&#8221; he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>Las Cruces City Councilor Gregory Z. Smith recently abandoned the two-party system, switching his registration from Democrat to declined-to-state\u00a0(which we informally\u00a0call &#8220;independent&#8221;). He penned\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/las_cruces-opinion\/ci_27413929\/letters-jan-29\" target=\"_blank\">a letter<\/a>\u00a0calling New Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0closed-primary\u00a0system a &#8220;de facto form of voter suppression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Smith joined NMPolitics.net&#8217;s Facebook discussion to express his dislike of labels, saying &#8220;sooner or later they either confine or misleadingly define (or, of course, do both).&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Disagreements\u00a0within a party<\/h3>\n<p>Others have less resistance to labels.\u00a0Claudia Anderson of Farmington, a Democrat, calls herself a &#8220;liberal&#8221;\u00a0and described that\u00a0label\u00a0this way (referencing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/primary-resources\/jfk-nyliberal\/\" target=\"_blank\">a quote<\/a> from former President John F. Kennedy): &#8220;someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people &#8212; their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties, someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Violet Cauthon of Las Cruces identifies\u00a0as a &#8220;liberal Democrat&#8221; who believes in the principles\u00a0laid out in the Democratic Party&#8217;s platform. Like Courtney, Cauthon\u00a0noted that\u00a0the platform of her party isn&#8217;t\u00a0always followed.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s clearly disagreement within both major political parties that labels like Democrat and Republican don&#8217;t adequately capture. There&#8217;s also debate over use of the\u00a0term &#8220;progressive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two people who participated in the Facebook conversations &#8212; Tito Meyer of Las Cruces and Jim O&#8217;Donnell of Taos &#8212; identified as progressives with libertarian streaks.\u00a0Cindy Madrid of Socorro identified as &#8220;liberal and libertarian, environmentalist, feminist, socialist,&#8221; and said &#8220;liberalism or progressivism both consist of a high standard of moral tenants based on The Golden Rule, empirical science and sustainability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0Carlos Casta\u00f1eda of Las Cruces said he &#8220;can&#8217;t stand &#8216;progressive&#8217;\u00a0because half the people who claim to be have no idea what it means, and it&#8217;s killing the movement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Casta\u00f1eda labeled\u00a0himself a &#8220;moderate Democrat&#8221; who is &#8220;levelheaded in my political beliefs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>The effect of circumstance<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s also important to note\u00a0that how\u00a0people identify\u00a0can shift over time. And it depends in part on circumstance.<\/p>\n<p>Pew Research Center explained\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2012\/08\/03\/party-affiliation-and-election-polls\/\" target=\"_blank\">in 2012<\/a>\u00a0that identification as Democrat, Republican or independent is fickle. In the months after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, for example, polls found &#8220;a substantial increase&#8221; in the percentage of people calling themselves Republicans. That doesn&#8217;t mean everyone who identified as Republican was a registered member of the GOP.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Public opinion researchers generally consider party affiliation to be a psychological identification with one of the two major political parties,&#8221; the Pew post states. &#8220;It is not the same thing as party registration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brandi McAlexander of Farmington was a Democrat when she was young. In her 20s she became a Republican.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now I consider myself an independent because I think both parties are wrong,&#8221; she said. &#8220;No one is focusing on what matters or what the real issues are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think I am an independent in the traditional sense of the word,&#8221;McAlexander said, &#8220;but I don&#8217;t have anything else to call myself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>A prior version of this posting failed to make clear that Claudia Anderson was referencing a quote from Kennedy.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If understood, political labels can be useful.
