{"id":4272,"date":"2009-02-23T13:35:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-23T19:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/02\/house-oks-national-popular-vote-legislation\/"},"modified":"2009-02-23T13:35:00","modified_gmt":"2009-02-23T19:35:00","slug":"house-oks-national-popular-vote-legislation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/02\/house-oks-national-popular-vote-legislation\/","title":{"rendered":"House OKs National Popular Vote legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SaL63x4b9YI\/AAAAAAAAK6g\/bzo7Hq1snuM\/s1600-h\/2009Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 100px; height: 150px;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SaL63x4b9YI\/AAAAAAAAK6g\/bzo7Hq1snuM\/s200\/2009Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306079147185665410\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The New Mexico House approved a proposal on Friday that would, if enacted by enough states, effectively eliminate the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electoral_college\" target=\"_blank\">Electoral College<\/a> process for selecting the president of the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On a largely party-line vote of 41-27, the House approved the National Popular Vote proposal &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?Chamber=H&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=383&amp;year=09\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 383<\/a>, sponsored by Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HSTEW\" target=\"_blank\">Mimi Stewart<\/a>, D-Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m thrilled that the National Popular Vote has passed the House and will now be headed to the Senate,\u201d Stewart said in a news release. \u201cEvery vote should count equally in our country, and this vote today takes us one step closer to expanding our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The National Popular Vote proposal takes effect only when adopted in identical form by states possessing enough electoral votes to elect the president (at least 270 of 538). States with a total of 50 electoral votes &#8212; Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland and New Jersey &#8212; have already enacted it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If enough states agree to it, all the electoral votes from the enacting states will be awarded as a bloc to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states, which would effectively bypass the Electoral College system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill is now in the hands of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/committeedisplay.aspx?CommitteeCode=SJC\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Judiciary Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New Mexico House approved a proposal on Friday that would, if enacted by enough states, effectively eliminate the Electoral College process for selecting the president of the United States.
