{"id":427,"date":"2006-08-02T08:04:00","date_gmt":"2006-08-02T14:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/08\/commuter-rail-seeing-success-but-jury-still-out\/"},"modified":"2006-08-02T08:04:00","modified_gmt":"2006-08-02T14:04:00","slug":"commuter-rail-seeing-success-but-jury-still-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/08\/commuter-rail-seeing-success-but-jury-still-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Commuter rail seeing success, but jury still out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Richardson%2C%20Bill.47.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Richardson%2C%20Bill.44.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Since the state began commuter rail service more than two weeks ago between Albuquerque and Bernalillo, there have been more than 50,000 passenger boardings, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/metro\/480730metro08-02-06.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> is reporting today.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s a surprisingly impressive number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The state has spent an ungodly massive $400 million on the rail project and, intentionally or not, the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> administration misrepresented the cost to legislators during the early approval stages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That made the rail a politically hot potato, and was a large reason there were so many critics of funding for the spaceport in this year\u2019s legislative session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gov. Bill Richardson took some hits, but he insisted the rail would benefit the state, and pleaded for people to give it a chance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The jury\u2019s still out, but the early results are better than most predicted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The state is averaging 4,500 to 4,700 riders per day. Some routes are at capacity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The state is set to expand the service south to Belen in 2-3 months and to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> in 2008. <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> eventually wants to rail to run all the way from <st1:city st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:city> to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Denver<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There\u2019s a really big asterisk here: The service is currently free. There\u2019s no cost for the first three months. Will people still ride when they have to pay?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If gas prices keep rising (and they will), maybe.
