{"id":4257,"date":"2009-02-18T15:43:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-18T21:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/02\/top-staffer-for-state-das-arrested-for-dwi\/"},"modified":"2009-02-18T15:43:00","modified_gmt":"2009-02-18T21:43:00","slug":"top-staffer-for-state-das-arrested-for-dwi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/02\/top-staffer-for-state-das-arrested-for-dwi\/","title":{"rendered":"Top staffer for state DAs arrested for DWI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SZyCJVAN5HI\/AAAAAAAAK4U\/xObMF6-umM0\/s1600-h\/Saavedra,+Randy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 120px; height: 160px;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SZyCJVAN5HI\/AAAAAAAAK4U\/xObMF6-umM0\/s200\/Saavedra,+Randy.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304257557904090226\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The top staffer for the state\u2019s district attorneys was arrested last weekend on suspicion of drunken driving, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/181145149453newsstate02-18-09.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> is reporting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Randy Saavedra, director of the <span class=\"popup\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.da.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Administrative Office of the District Attorneys<\/a>, was stopped at a DWI checkpoint near Bernalillo over the weekend and arrested, but he says he wasn\u2019t intoxicated and will fight the charges.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"popup\">\u201cI am very upset about this,\u201d the Journal quoted him as saying.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"popup\">Saavedra, the newspaper reported, has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving before, in 2001, but the charge was dismissed by the district attorney in Bernalillo County. That was before Saavedra became head of the state-funded office in 2006.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"popup\">He was appointed to the job by a board made up of the state\u2019s district attorneys.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"popup\">Saavedra has also received dozens of traffic citations in the last 20 years, according to the Journal. As of the 2001 arrest, the Journal reported, Saavedra had been cited 36 times since 1989 and had never paid a fine or received a jail sentence.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"popup\">Saavedra is the son of state Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HSAAV\" target=\"_blank\">Kiki Saavedra<\/a>, D-Albuquerque. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At the time of his Saturday arrest, Randy Saavedra had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech and a \u201cstrong odor\u201d of alcohol, the criminal complaint states. It also states that sobriety tests showed \u201cseveral signs of impairment.\u201d But the report doesn\u2019t include a blood-alcohol level, according to the Journal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Saavedra was quoted by the Journal as saying he had been drinking some champagne and his blood-alcohol level tested at 0.08 percent &#8212; which is the legal level of intoxication &#8212; but was tested again because the breathalyzer wasn\u2019t working and came back at 0.07 percent, just below the legal level. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The top staffer for the state\u2019s district attorneys was arrested last weekend on suspicion of drunken driving, the Albuquerque Journal is reporting.
