{"id":4197,"date":"2009-02-02T00:03:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-02T06:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/02\/steinborn-among-those-pushing-contribution-limits\/"},"modified":"2009-02-02T00:03:00","modified_gmt":"2009-02-02T06:03:00","slug":"steinborn-among-those-pushing-contribution-limits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/02\/steinborn-among-those-pushing-contribution-limits\/","title":{"rendered":"Steinborn among those pushing contribution limits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SYaNPf5Z_YI\/AAAAAAAAKws\/opX7hPFor0c\/s1600-h\/2009Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 100px; height: 150px;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SYaNPf5Z_YI\/AAAAAAAAKws\/opX7hPFor0c\/s200\/2009Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298077309047799170\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HSTEI\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Steinborn<\/a> became on Friday the latest lawmaker to introduce a bill that would cap campaign contributions in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Steinborn\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?Chamber=H&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=495&amp;year=09\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 495<\/a> is different than bills that have been given serious consideration in recent years in that, in addition to placing limits on campaign contributions, it would also make it a fourth-degree felony to violate the act in excess of $10,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHouse Bill 495 is not only the toughest campaign contribution legislation introduced this session,\u201d the Las Cruces Democrat said in a news release, \u201cbut it is also endorsed by members of both parties. If enacted in law, these limits would ensure that New Mexico\u2019s government belongs to our citizens and not to the deep pockets of large campaign contributors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SYaNJXlz9hI\/AAAAAAAAKwk\/SWRUNF7t8IU\/s1600-h\/Steinborn,+Jeff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 120px; height: 162px;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SYaNJXlz9hI\/AAAAAAAAKwk\/SWRUNF7t8IU\/s200\/Steinborn,+Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298077203738916370\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Steinborn\u2019s news release listed Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HSTEW\" target=\"_blank\">Mimi Stewart<\/a>, D-Albuquerque; Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HLARR\" target=\"_blank\">Larry Larra\u00f1aga<\/a>, R-Albuquerque; and Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HBAND\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Bandy<\/a>, R-Aztec as the primary co-sponsors of the legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill would cap contributions to candidates at $2,300, to political committees at $5,000, and to political parties at $10,000. The bill matches the 2008 limits for federal candidates except in the case of political parties\u2019 contributions to candidates, which under federal law can be as great as $5,000. And while federal law allows limits to increase automatically based on consumer price indexing &#8212; as the limit individuals can give to candidates just increased from $2,300 to $2,400 &#8212; Steinborn\u2019s bill would require that any future increases in state contribution limits be approved by the Legislature and governor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe need for contribution limits in New Mexico is long overdue. I applaud this bipartisan effort to come together for the benefit of our state, and I urge the Legislature to adopt this very important measure,\u201d Stewart said of the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">New Mexico is one of only a handful of states with no campaign contribution limits. In 2007 and 2008, the House and Senate approved different contribution-limits bills and never reconciled those differences, so the proposal died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The other contribution limit bills that have been introduced this year are:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?Chamber=H&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=252&amp;year=09\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 252<\/a>, sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HPARK\" target=\"_blank\">Al Park<\/a>, D-Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?Chamber=S&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=116&amp;year=09\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 116<\/a>, sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SFELD\" target=\"_blank\">Dede Feldman<\/a>, D-Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?Chamber=S&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=262&amp;year=09\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 262<\/a>, sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SBEFF\" target=\"_blank\">Sue Wilson Beffort<\/a>, R-Sandia Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?Chamber=S&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=346&amp;year=09\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 346<\/a>, sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SSANB\" target=\"_blank\">Bernadette Sanchez<\/a>, D-Albuquerque.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State Rep.
