Jennings won today with a coalition of Republicans and Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Under that collation, the Senate has been the only real check on the governor\u2019s power in Santa Fe, and many had characterized the leadership battle as a choice between continuing along that path or becoming friendlier to <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> and his agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 1 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Democrats who sided with Republicans to keep Jennings as pro tem were Jennings, Linda Lopez, Linda Lovejoy, Howie Morales, George Mu\u00f1oz, Mary Kay Papen, John Sapien and John Arthur Smith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 1:25 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhile there might be a little divide, that\u2019s over. I am a Democrat and I am here to represent this body,\u201d Jennings was quoted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicoindependent.com\/15804\/a-coalition-of-democrats-and-republicans-elects-tim-jennings-as-nm-senate-leader\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico Independent<\/a> as saying on the Senate floor after his victory. He added that it is his job \u201cto make sure this chamber is run in a fair and equitable way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 5:05 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Richardson released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI congratulate the newly-elected leaders of the House and Senate.
