{"id":412,"date":"2006-07-28T08:08:00","date_gmt":"2006-07-28T14:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/07\/house-republicans-immigration-stalling-tactic-coming-to-las-cruces\/"},"modified":"2006-07-28T08:08:00","modified_gmt":"2006-07-28T14:08:00","slug":"house-republicans-immigration-stalling-tactic-coming-to-las-cruces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/07\/house-republicans-immigration-stalling-tactic-coming-to-las-cruces\/","title":{"rendered":"House Republicans&#8217; immigration stalling tactic coming to Las Cruces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">House Republican members are coming to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> on Thursday to conduct an on-the-road hearing on immigration, according to an article in the <a href=\"http:\/\/elpasotimes.com\/news\/ci_4105314\" target=\"_blank\">El Paso Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">They\u2019ll also be in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">El   Paso<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on Aug. 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s part of their 13-state tour in August. The <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> hearing of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cha.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Administration Committee<\/a> will deal with the question of how Congress can \u201cbest protect the integrity of the federal voting process by combating election fraud and eliminating non-citizen voting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s a contentious issue here. <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, in theory, allows non-citizens to vote by requiring only the display of something like a utility bill for a first-time voter, and not an actual government-issued identification card.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But since most undocumented immigrants fear capture and the system, it\u2019s not likely many of them are voting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The state is also in the process of switching back to paper ballots for elections, a system favored by most Democrats and opposed by most Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">None of the House committee\u2019s members are from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> or surrounding states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The House and Senate were close to a compromise twice this year on immigration reform, but talks stalled both times. Republicans in the House ended negotiations with the Senate so they could conduct hearings throughout the summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many Democrats have called it a stalling tactic.
