Yates Jr. has formally announced his candidacy for chairman of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Party of New Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The oil giant\u2019s candidacy had been previously known, but he formally announced it Wednesday in a letter to members of the party\u2019s state central committee, who will select new officers at a meeting on Saturday in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cYou will remember that Ronald Reagan once said, \u2018\u2026man is not free unless government is limited.\u2019  That is true, and it is also true that the transfer of more and more power to government enhances the opportunity to engage in corrupt \u2018Pay to Play\u2019 activities by those who have no integrity,\u201d Yates wrote in the letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \u201cYet, today, we are faced with an increased liberal majority in our state legislature whose orientation is toward increasing the power of government and diminishing the rights of individuals,\u201d Yates wrote. \u201cTo defeat them we are faced with daunting challenges. But, if we bind the wounds within our party and work together, we have the opportunity to save New Mexico for those who know that limited government is the most likely route to freedom and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Yates already has the endorsements of several big-name Republicans including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pete_Domenici\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heather_Wilson\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Pearce\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>. Still, he will apparently face at least three other candidates for the chairmanship at the meeting. The most formidable appears to be Farmington doctor <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/12\/mcculloch-announces-run-for-gop.html\">Allen McCulloch<\/a>, who ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> in 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Yates wrote in his letter that he wants to strengthen the state party\u2019s relationship with county parties, increase minority outreach, work with Republican legislators and develop a \u201cFarm Team\u201d to help recruit, train and finance candidates for local races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI would be remiss if I did not also say that one of the things we must do in our party is to still the hands of those in the party, particularly a few political professionals, who believe that they can profit from the use of half truth and duplicity to gain their ends,\u201d Yates wrote. \u201cOur party must stand for truthfulness and integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harvey E.
