{"id":408,"date":"2006-07-26T16:32:00","date_gmt":"2006-07-26T22:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/07\/sides-disagree-on-whether-house-bill-would-leave-jemez-casino-proposal-intact\/"},"modified":"2006-07-26T16:32:00","modified_gmt":"2006-07-26T22:32:00","slug":"sides-disagree-on-whether-house-bill-would-leave-jemez-casino-proposal-intact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/07\/sides-disagree-on-whether-house-bill-would-leave-jemez-casino-proposal-intact\/","title":{"rendered":"Sides disagree on whether House bill would leave Jemez casino proposal intact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The two sides in the fight over the proposed Anthony casino had different takes on the impact of a bill that passed the House Committee on Resources Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/resourcescommittee.house.gov\/issues\/naia\/Pombo_Rahall_ANS_HR_4893.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">bill<\/a>, sponsored by the committee\u2019s chair, Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Calif., would effectively ban off-reservation casinos, period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill includes a grandfather clause that applies to proposals submitted before March 2006, as the Jemez proposal was, but only if the tribes have historical ties to the area where they want to build casinos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">What\u2019s disputed is whether the Jemez have historical ties to this area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Committee to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Protect<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>, which opposes the Jemez proposal, sent out a news release after Wednesday\u2019s vote declaring that the Jemez, \u201cby their own admission, have no geographical or historical ties to the area.\u201d The committee declared this the \u201cpossible death blow\u201d to the Jemez proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But Dave Wilson, spokesman for the Jemez and their partner, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> art dealer Gerald Peters, said there is \u201cwritten documentation\u201d that shows the Jemez were settled in the area for a time. He said some area mountains have Jemez names because the tribe was settled here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019re pretty upbeat about it,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said of the committee\u2019s vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And, <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> said, Pombo\u2019s bill would effectively kill the potential proliferation of off-reservation casinos the Committee to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Protect<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> says it fears, so this bill should allay their fears while allowing the Jemez proposal to proceed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s not likely. The committee is backed by Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino owner Stan Fulton, who doesn\u2019t want a casino in Anthony because it would compete with his operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill passed Pombo\u2019s committee by a vote of 27-9, with Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., voting for it and Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., voting against. The bill now moves to a full House vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A similar bill is also being considered in the Senate.
