Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltgovernor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_ blank\">Diane Denish<\/a> will become the first woman to be governor of New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The date that it will happen isn\u2019t set. Richardson says he won\u2019t resign until the U.S. Senate confirms his nomination, which won\u2019t take place until after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_ blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> is sworn in on Jan. 20. That means the transition is likely to occur in the middle of a 60-day state legislative session in which lawmakers and the governor will have to make up for a budget shortfall of hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Denish says she\u2019s up to the task.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI really want to ensure a smooth transition so that there\u2019s no disruption,\u201d she said today in a brief interview. \u201cI\u2019m ready for this job. It\u2019s a great opportunity for me, and we\u2019re going to ensure that we do it smoothly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Denish said she wanted to congratulate Richardson, who she called \u201cuniquely qualified\u201d for the commerce job and \u201ca great addition\u201d to Obama\u2019s cabinet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI just wanted to make sure that every New Mexican knew about how delighted I was about the governor\u2019s appointment as commerce secretary,\u201d Denish said. \u201c\u2026 He\u2019s going to be a great economic diplomat for the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Denish said she spoke with Richardson on Tuesday, and the two plan to meet Thursday morning to begin discussing the transition.
