Albuquerque Mayor Martin Ch\u00e1vez<\/a> is clearly gearing up to run for something, but just what he\u2019s getting ready to run for isn\u2019t clear at all.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s put up a new Web site at www.martychavez.com<\/a> that wishes visitors a Happy Thanksgiving and asks for their contact information. In addition, he\u2019s holding a Dec. 11 fundraiser for the Marty Ch\u00e1vez for New Mexico committee. It\u2019s not clear whether the committee is a city, state or federal committee, so that doesn\u2019t help reveal Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s intentions.<\/p>\n

Ch\u00e1vez has not responded to an e-mail request for comment and I\u2019ve been unable to reach him by phone. <\/span>Mark Fleisher, who managed the mayor\u2019s brief U.S. Senate run last year, has been telling people the fundraiser is to pay for a Thanksgiving card mailing and a holiday party.<\/p>\n

Ch\u00e1vez could seek another term as mayor next year. He could jump back into the 2010 gubernatorial race — which he left last year to launch his failed U.S. Senate bid — but Gov. Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> departure means he\u2019d be taking on an incumbent Diane Denish<\/a> in a Democratic primary.<\/p>\n

Maybe Ch\u00e1vez is gearing up to run for another state seat. Maybe he\u2019s hoping U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman<\/a> will retire in 2012 and he wants to be ready for the possibility.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not saying. So we\u2019re left guessing. One clue: Ch\u00e1vez has said in the past that he\u2019s interested in three elected positions: Albuquerque mayor, governor and U.S. senator.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
