But the mayor pro-tem is continuing to express concerns about compliance with the Open Meetings Act and has been seeking additional applications for the job.<\/h4>\n<p>Sunland Park might get a new mayor tonight. Then again, it might not.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The City Council plans to go ahead tonight with a public meeting at which it will interview Javier Perea and Gerardo Hernandez and then appoint one to the job. But the mayor pro-tem \u2013 currently the highest-ranking official in the city \u2013 is continuing to express concerns about compliance with the Open Meetings Act and has been seeking additional applications for the job.<\/p>\n<p>The Las Cruces Sun-News has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/las_cruces-news\/ci_20616854\/sunland-park-slated-appoint-mayor-tomorrow-night\" target=\"_blank\">the newest<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe two men who stepped forward for the vacant mayor\u2019s office during a contentious outdoor meeting on May 4 are the only candidates who will be considered Monday at a public hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, like she did on May 4, Sunland Park Mayor Pro-Tem Isabel Santos is questioning the legality of tonight\u2019s special city council meeting, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the courtyard outside city hall at 1000 McNutt Road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSantos said Friday that she had not seen or approved the meeting\u2019s agenda.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here\u2019s what should happen tonight, from the newspaper:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCity Councilor Carmen Rodriguez said the five city councilors legally scheduled tonight\u2019s meeting to appoint a mayor. The council will decide between Javier Perea, a 24-year-old former diamond salesman, and Gerardo Hernandez, the former mayoral candidate who lays claim to the title.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, the last meeting was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2012\/05\/chaotic-meeting-doesnt-end-with-new-sunland-park-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\">quite chaotic<\/a>. This meeting, like that one, will be held outdoors to accommodate the expected massive crowd.<\/p>\n<p>The Sun-News reported this last week in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/ci_20569087\/want-be-sunland-park-mayor-submit-r-233\" target=\"_blank\">a separate article<\/a> about what Santos is doing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSunland Park\u2019s top city official said Monday she\u2019ll accept r\u00e9sum\u00e9s through the end of (last) week for the vacant mayor\u2019s post, following a tumultuous meeting last week in which councilors postponed selecting a mayor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Sunland Park Mayor Pro Tem Isabel Santos, the city\u2019s top official, said she wants more time in advance of a May 14 meeting to review the r\u00e9sum\u00e9s of anyone wanting to become the city\u2019s mayor.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATED: Sunland Park\u2019s City Council has cancelled tonight\u2019s meeting at which it was scheduled to appoint a new mayor.
