Public records reveal that 1st Congressional District candidate Marty Ch\u00e1vez spent lots of time with a woman indicted in a hospital-embezzlement case during years in which she was allegedly committing those crimes.<\/h4>\n

1st Congressional District candidate Marty Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s<\/a> campaign has said repeatedly that his relationship with a woman indicted in a hospital-embezzlement case began in early 2009<\/a> \u2013 after Loretta Mares allegedly committed those crimes.<\/p>\n

However, the Albuquerque Journal reported this<\/a> over the weekend:<\/p>\n

\u201cBut city travel and phone records from Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s final term as mayor of Albuquerque, reviewed by the Journal, show more than 750 calls between Ch\u00e1vez and Mares on the mayor\u2019s city-provided cellphone over a 10-month period that began in August 2006. Many of the calls were on nights and weekends.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecords also show that while Ch\u00e1vez was mayor, Mares \u2013 who faces civil allegations and criminal charges \u2013 accompanied him on official trips to the Canary Islands, Israel and China in 2007 and 2008.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mares is accused of being involved in bilking a Santa Fe hospital out of at least $2.5 million between 2005 and 2008.<\/p>\n

The response from Ch\u00e1vez:<\/p>\n

\u201cAsked by the Journal about the phone calls and trips, Ch\u00e1vez said in an interview last week that he stands by the previous statements. He said he and Mares had dated but weren\u2019t in an \u2018exclusive\u2019 relationship until early 2009.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018We were going out,\u2019 said Ch\u00e1vez, who has been divorced since 2004. \u2018I\u2019ve known Loretta for years.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026Ch\u00e1vez said in the interview last week that he couldn\u2019t recall exactly when he and Mares started dating and said both had dated other people prior to 2009.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said Mares was the only woman he had dated who accompanied him on official trips that included official government trade missions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ch\u00e1vez has not been accused of any crime related to the alleged embezzlement and his campaign has said he had no knowledge of the alleged criminal activity.<\/p>\n
