\"\"<\/a>Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney<\/a> says he\u2019s confident that undecided New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> voters are swinging toward John McCain<\/a> and Steve Pearce<\/a> in the final days before the election. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThe question is whether we can move them enough that we can win,\u201d Romney said today in a phone interview.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The former Massachusetts<\/st1:state> governor was speaking from Farmington<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, where he held a rally this morning attended by Pearce, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate, and about 250 people. Romney said the energy at the event was good, and he\u2019s becoming increasingly confident about the possibility that McCain and Pearce will win.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Romney has spent a great deal of time helping Pearce this year. He stood in for Pearce at a campaign fundraiser at the Republican Party\u2019s presidential nominating convention in Minnesota<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> after Pearce\u2019s father died and he had to skip the event. Romney was also in Albuquerque<\/st1:city> and Santa Fe<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> several weeks ago to campaign with Pearce.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Polls have shown Pearce way behind Democratic opponent Tom Udall<\/a> in the Senate race, but Romney said Udall isn\u2019t in line with New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> voters.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t think of New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> as a really liberal state,\u201d Romney said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

As for the presidential race, Romney said McCain\u2019s internal polling has the GOP candidate within the margin of error. The actions of the McCain campaign reflect that: Sarah Palin<\/a> was here two weekends ago, McCain was here last weekend, Rudy Giuliani<\/a> is also in the state this weekend and McCain will be back here on Monday.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019ve got a real shot here,\u201d Romney said. \u201cTwo weeks ago it looked impossible, but the polls that we\u2019re seeing now, the people we\u2019re speaking with, the sentiment we\u2019re seeing, suggests that this is winnable.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

He said it\u2019s telling that Barack Obama<\/a> is drawing huge crowds at rallies and has outspent McCain three to one, and yet, \u201csomehow, they haven\u2019t sealed the deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
