{"id":3925,"date":"2008-10-31T14:49:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-31T20:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/richardson-reignites-confusion-over-obama-tax-plan\/"},"modified":"2008-10-31T14:49:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-31T20:49:00","slug":"richardson-reignites-confusion-over-obama-tax-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/richardson-reignites-confusion-over-obama-tax-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson reignites confusion over Obama tax plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SQtwWy83bSI\/AAAAAAAAJOM\/91nCtR-4xXc\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 120px; height: 160px;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SQtwWy83bSI\/AAAAAAAAJOM\/91nCtR-4xXc\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263424126449052962\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Republicans are using a statement Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> made today to accuse <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> of lying about tax cuts he has promised most Americans, but a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> staffer says the governor simply misspoke in claiming that Obama will cut taxes for those making $120,000 and under.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Speaking about Obama\u2019s tax plan, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G88ebXY2uaI\" target=\"_blank\">told a Colorado radio station<\/a> today that Obama \u201cis basically looking at $120,000 and under, among those that are in the middle class, and there is a tax cut for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Obama has laid out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\">his tax plan on his Web site<\/a>: He claims no family making less than $250,000 annually would see a tax increase under his plan. In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vJvkRFKGgGw\" target=\"_blank\">a recent TV ad<\/a>, Obama said Americans who \u201chave a job, pay taxes and make less than $200,000 a year\u201d will get a tax cut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> spokesman Pahl Shipley said <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> misspoke. The governor, he said, \u201cmeant to say $250,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So, insert that number into <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s quote, and he would have stated that those making less than $250,000 will get a tax cut. But wait: Didn\u2019t I just write that Obama says those making less than $200,000 will get a tax cut?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I did. So now I\u2019m confused about what the governor meant and whether he is also confused about Obama\u2019s tax plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S8sWT_SSQwE\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Biden ignited similar confusion<\/a> days ago when he said the tax break would go to \u201cmiddle-class people &#8212; people making under $150,000 a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Biden\u2019s comments gave <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John McCain<\/a> an opening to attack:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSen. Obama has made a lot of promises,\u201d McCain said. \u201cFirst, he said people making less than $250,000 would benefit from his plan. Then this weekend, he announced in an ad that if you\u2019re a family making less than $200,000, you\u2019ll benefit. But yesterday, right here in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Pennsylvania<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, Sen, Biden said tax relief should only go to \u2018middle class people &#8212; people making under $150,000 a year.\u2019 It\u2019s interesting how their definition of rich has a way of creeping down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As <a href=\"http:\/\/firstread.msnbc.msn.com\/archive\/2008\/10\/28\/1600845.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">reported by MSNBC<\/a>, the Obama campaign later said Biden was citing \u201can example of what someone making that amount would get under Obama\u2019s tax plan. Indeed, Biden\u2019s $150,000 remark came after he referred to someone making $1.4 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">MSNBC also points out that Obama said at one forum in August that, under his plan, \u201cif you make $150,000 or less, you will see a tax cut. If you\u2019re making $250,000 a year or more, you\u2019re going to see a modest increase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I thought the tax-cut threshold was $200,000, not $150,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Republicans attack<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SQtwXaniHiI\/AAAAAAAAJOU\/swT_oRSRAc4\/s1600-h\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 120px; height: 160px;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SQtwXaniHiI\/AAAAAAAAJOU\/swT_oRSRAc4\/s200\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263424137096994338\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Anyway, the furor over the various statements had begun to die down until <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> stepped into the mess today. Here\u2019s what Bill Riggs, the Republican National Committee\u2019s regional press secretary, had to say in an e-mail to reporters:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt started at $250,000, then it was $200,000, then it was $150,000, and NOW it is $120,000,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBarack Obama and Joe Biden continue to talk out of both sides of their mouth on their plans to raise taxes on the American people. It is only a matter of time until Obama admits the truth &#8212; he voted for higher taxes on people making only $42,000 a year. People all over <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> are learning that when the Obama camp comes to your door this Halloween, there will be no treats &#8212; just taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">For the facts on the $42,000 claim, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/elections-2008\/more_tax_deceptions.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, on a conference call today with reporters, said Richardson, Biden and Obama are preparing <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> for a tax increase. She said she believes Obama plans to get into the White House based on a promise of tax cuts and then announce that the situation is worse than he thought and he\u2019s going to have to raise taxes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think Gov. Richardson spoke the truth this morning,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> said, adding that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> could be a cabinet member if Obama is elected. \u201c\u2026 Someone at that level can\u2019t afford to make a stupid mistake like that.
