{"id":3911,"date":"2008-10-29T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-29T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/pac-with-ties-to-oil-and-gas-plays-big-in-state-races\/"},"modified":"2008-10-29T14:30:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-29T20:30:00","slug":"pac-with-ties-to-oil-and-gas-plays-big-in-state-races","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/pac-with-ties-to-oil-and-gas-plays-big-in-state-races\/","title":{"rendered":"PAC with ties to oil and gas plays big in state races"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A political action committee funded almost entirely by companies tied to one family that makes its living in the oil and gas industry is contributing big money to six Republican candidates for state House seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Much of the focus appears to be in Do\u00f1a Ana County, where <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sos.state.nm.us\/Webethics\/contributors.aspx?pitemid=9940&amp;rpts=13194%7C12372%7C11338%7C9486%7C9484\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico Turn Around<\/a> has contributed $16,000 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sos.state.nm.us\/Webethics\/contributors.aspx?pitemid=7561&amp;rpts=12224%7C11866%7C10854%7C10853\" target=\"_blank\">county GOP<\/a> on top of the $27,840 it has given directly to <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sos.state.nm.us\/Webethics\/contributors.aspx?pitemid=11561&amp;rpts=12430%7C11641%7C10351%7C9279\" target=\"_blank\">Kent Evans<\/a> and the $13,200 it has given to <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sos.state.nm.us\/Webethics\/contributors.aspx?pitemid=11755&amp;rpts=13074\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Tellez<\/a>. Evans is challenging <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeffsteinborn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Steinborn<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, while Tellez is challenging <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/LCS\/legdetails.asp?Name=213\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Nu\u00f1ez<\/a>, D-Hatch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Since the PAC gave the money to the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">county<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placename st=\"on\">GOP<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> on Aug. 5, the party has given another $7,500 to Tellez and $3,642.25 to Evans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Almost all of the PAC\u2019s funding comes from companies tied to the Yates family of southeastern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, which is the largest holder of oil and gas leases on federal land in the nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The PAC has also given $27,840 to <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sos.state.nm.us\/Webethics\/contributors.aspx?pitemid=10930&amp;rpts=12308%7C11482%7C10599%7C9571\" target=\"_blank\">Paula Papponi<\/a>, who is running against Democrat Jack Thomas for an open seat in the Rio Rancho area; $24,630 to <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sos.state.nm.us\/Webethics\/contributors.aspx?pitemid=11878&amp;rpts=13099%7C12965\" target=\"_blank\">Cathrynn Brown<\/a>, who is running against <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/LCS\/legdetails.asp?Name=198\" target=\"_blank\">John Heaton<\/a>, D-Carlsbad; and $15,000 apiece to <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sos.state.nm.us\/Webethics\/contributors.aspx?pitemid=11262&amp;rpts=13059%7C13058%7C13002%7C11883\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Lardner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sos.state.nm.us\/Webethics\/contributors.aspx?pitemid=11017&amp;rpts=11640%7C11364%7C9360\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Rush<\/a>. Lardner is running against <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=332\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Barreras<\/a>, D-Tome, and Rush is running against <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/LCS\/legdetails.asp?Name=185\" target=\"_blank\">Jose Campos<\/a>, D-Santa Rosa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition, Brown received another $5,000 from Yates Petroleum and another $4,000 from John Yates, president of Yates Petroleum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The PAC\u2019s contributions represent a significant percentage of the total fundraising for each of the six GOP candidates. Evans had raised a total of $59,225.58 as of the campaign finance report submitted to the Secretary of State\u2019s Office on Oct. 13. All numbers in this posting come from reports due on that day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tellez had raised $22,630. Papponi had raised $45,932.94. Brown had raised $49,577. Lardner had raised $34,315.
