{"id":390618,"date":"2017-07-18T13:42:20","date_gmt":"2017-07-18T19:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=390618"},"modified":"2017-07-19T20:49:57","modified_gmt":"2017-07-20T02:49:57","slug":"dunn-will-run-for-u-s-house-instead-of-land-commissioner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2017\/07\/dunn-will-run-for-u-s-house-instead-of-land-commissioner\/","title":{"rendered":"Dunn will run for U.S. House instead of land commissioner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>State Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn will run for the open 2nd Congressional District seat in the U.S. House next year instead of seeking re-election to his current job.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_126499\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-126499\" src=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Dunn-Aubrey-336x244.jpg\" alt=\"Aubrey Dunn\" width=\"336\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Dunn-Aubrey-336x244.jpg 336w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Dunn-Aubrey.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Courtesy photo<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aubrey Dunn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWith my decades of experience in business, agriculture and public service, I will fight to create jobs, improve our economy, reform health care and protect our border,&#8221; Dunn, a Republican, said in a Tuesday news release announcing his congressional candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. House seat is being vacated by Steve Pearce, a Republican who last week announced that he&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2017\/07\/pearce-to-run-for-governor-instead-of-seeking-re-election-to-u-s-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">running for governor<\/a> in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Steve Pearce running for governor, the stakes are simply too high for southern New Mexicans to lose an experienced, pro-jobs representative in Congress,\u201d Dunn said.<\/p>\n<p>Dunn ran for the U.S. House seat in 2008, the last time the race lacked an incumbent. He lost a crowded GOP primary that year <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/06\/tinsley-wins-republican-2nd-district-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to Ed Tinsley<\/a>, who went on to lose the general election contest to Democrat Harry Teague.<\/p>\n<p>Dunn is the second Republican to enter the 2018 race since Pearce announced his candidacy for governor. Last week, state Rep. Yvette Herrell, R-Alamogordo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alamogordonews.com\/story\/news\/local\/community\/2017\/07\/12\/yvette-herrell-running-congressional-seat-vacated-pearce\/470703001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joined the race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have made the decision to run for Congress because I care about New Mexico and understand the importance of having a voice in Washington that will represent our values, our culture and our future,&#8221; Herrell said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>Dunn, with his name recognition and statewide fundraising experience, is likely to be seen at this stage as the favorite in the GOP primary.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Four Democrats, all political newcomers, joined the congressional race before Pearce announced he wasn&#8217;t seeking re-election: David Baake, who once\u00a0worked for the Natural Resources Defense Council; Las Cruces activist Ronald Fitzherbert; Socorro resident Madeleine Hildebrandt, a Coast Guard veteran and college history teacher; and Tony Martinez, co-leader\u00a0of the Las Cruces\u00a0Indivisible group.<\/p>\n<p>Pearce&#8217;s decision has sparked speculation about whether a higher-profile Democrat will join the race to replace him. None have announced their candidacies yet.<\/p>\n<p>The district\u00a0historically\u00a0leans Republican but is being <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/334559-house-democrats-expand-2018-targets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">targeted by Democrats<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Party was quick to attack Dunn after he announced his candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Aubrey Dunn is another Republican with an extreme record that works against New Mexicans and won&#8217;t benefit in our economy,&#8221; Richard Ellenberg, chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico, said in a news release. &#8220;Democrats have renewed energy in the 2nd\u00a0Congressional District and we&#8217;re going to do everything we can to take that seat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dunn, the son of a former state senator, grew up in Otero County and worked in the banking industry for 25 years. He&#8217;s also a cattle rancher, and he and his wife Robin own and operate the Gran Quivira Ranch near Corona.<\/p>\n<p>Dunn was elected land commissioner in 2014.
