The election is a week from Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley spokesman Jim Pettit wouldn\u2019t directly confirm the cancellation of the ad buys, but he said the campaign is \u201cincreasing our media buy 50 percent district-wide in a strategic shift that emphasizes targeted advertising to reach selected demographic groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhile we can\u2019t discuss specific tactics, our research shows the need for specific messages best achieved through targeted media buys,\u201d Pettit said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Conventional wisdom suggests that candidates\u2019 most effective way to reach the largest number of voters is through broadcast television, which is more expensive than cable but reaches a wider audience. Pettit hasn\u2019t provided a response to a follow-up e-mail asking whether the campaign is shifting its dollars from broadcast television to cable television or radio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <st1:city st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:city> market serves <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename>, and the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> market serves the rest of the 2nd District.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tinsley\u2019s Democratic opponent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Teague<\/a>, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither did the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee<\/a> (DCCC), which is spending $1.2 million to help Teague get elected. In addition to the help from the DCCC, Teague is up on broadcast and cable television with his own ads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">By comparison, the DCCC\u2019s Republican counterpart, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Republican Congressional Committee<\/a>, has spent $42,000 on Tinsley\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The move by the Tinsley campaign comes on a day that news leaked of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/blogs\/washington-whispers\/2008\/10\/22\/gop-death-list-predicts-democratic-blowout-in-the-house.html\" target=\"_blank\">an internal memo called a \u201cdeath list\u201d<\/a> being circulated among House Republicans that predicts the GOP could lose 34 seats in the House on Nov. 4. It rates the 2nd District race as being a toss-up, which <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/pundits-figure-out-that-2nd-district.html\">matches is what several independent analysts have also said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There have been only two polls released publicly of the 2nd District race. The most recent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2008\/10\/3\/141218\/182\/224\/619123\" target=\"_blank\">conducted by Research 2000 for DailyKos<\/a>, had Teague leading 47 percent to 43 percent. The survey of 400 likely voters was conducted Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and has a margin of error of 5 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The second, a Teague campaign internal poll, had Teague leading 46 percent to 41 percent.
