That appears to mirror a national shift as Obama goes on the offensive in traditionally conservative areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said there\u2019s a good reason to focus on the south.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSouthern New Mexico, with <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city> as its center, now becomes the battleground and a must-win for John McCain,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cIf he ties or loses narrowly there, the race is over and Obama wins the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SP4xFjKkfKI\/AAAAAAAAJIM\/tEhA4juwDAw\/s1600-h\/McCain,+John.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SP4xFjKkfKI\/AAAAAAAAJIM\/tEhA4juwDAw\/s200\/McCain,+John.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259695386224000162\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Why? Polls show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/nm\/new_mexico_mccain_vs_obama-448.html\" target=\"_blank\">Obama leading by several percentage points<\/a> in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. The campaigns are vying for the same voters &#8212; the 5-8 percent who are undecided and the conservative, largely Hispanic Democrats who helped <st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city> carry <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename> and southern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> over Obama in the Feb. 5 primary. That\u2019s according to political analyst and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> government professor Jose Z. Garcia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere are a number of Hispanics who were for Clinton who never warmed up to Obama and, I think, on the other hand are not happy with the McCain campaign, they\u2019re not happy with Palin necessarily, and yet they just haven\u2019t been quite coaxed into the Obama camp,\u201d said Garcia, who is an active Democrat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Enter Biden, who <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/biden-rallies-southern-nm-voters-for.html\">was in Mesilla<\/a> on Friday. <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/palin-attacks-obama-rallies-gop-base.html\">Palin was in Roswell<\/a> on Sunday. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democracyfornewmexico.com\/democracy_for_new_mexico\/2008\/10\/nm-02-harry-tro.html\" target=\"_blank\">Richardson spent Saturday at get-out-the-vote rallies<\/a> around southern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. McCain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/abqnews\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=9100&amp;Itemid=2\" target=\"_blank\">plans to hold a rally in Mesilla<\/a> this coming Saturday. <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/hillary-coming-to-southern-nm-for-obama.html\">Clinton will also be in southern New Mexico<\/a> on Saturday to campaign for Obama. Though the campaign hasn\u2019t released additional details about <st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city>\u2019s visit, well-connected Democrats believe she will be in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> on the same day that McCain comes here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city> is also scheduled to appear from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday at an event in Canutillo, which is on the <st1:state st=\"on\">Texas<\/st1:state> side of the border but still in the region that includes southern <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>. That visit is being reported on by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kvia.com\/global\/story.asp?s=9209070\" target=\"_blank\">KVIA-TV in El Paso<\/a>, but whether the event is a rally for Obama isn\u2019t clear, and the campaign isn\u2019t commenting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Obama on the offensive<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">To this point, Obama and McCain have both paid some attention to southern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> by sending surrogates to the region. And each candidate has visited <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city> once &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/05\/obama-visit-appeared-designed-for.html\">Obama in May<\/a> for an invitation-only event and <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/08\/mccain-woos-hispanics-dems-and.html\">McCain in August<\/a> for a small public rally &#8212; but each candidate has focused most of his own time during visits to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> in the Albuquerque\/Santa Fe area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The shift to the south comes as Obama has climbed ahead of McCain in polls of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and other swing states. Because of that, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/politico\/20081016\/pl_politico\/14624_1\" target=\"_blank\">Obama is going on the offensive<\/a>, moving into areas that trend toward Republicans and forcing McCain to play defense there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Southern New Mexico<\/st1:place>\u2019s 2nd Congressional District is one of those red regions. A recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/storyonly\/2008\/10\/3\/141218\/182\/224\/619123\" target=\"_blank\">Research 2000 poll<\/a> conducted for Daily Kos has McCain leading in the district by 7 percentage points with a 5-point margin of error. An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/elex\/05112534elex10-05-08.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal poll<\/a> doesn\u2019t break down the numbers by congressional district, but has McCain leading by 41 points on the conservative east side of the state and by 20 points in the south. The south is in the 2nd District, as is a portion of the eastern side of the state. That poll had a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But the 2nd District race between Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Teague<\/a> and Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtinsleyforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Tinsley<\/a> is an indicator that even voters in the conservative southern region of the state are trending to the left this year. Polls have shown that Teague has a slight lead in the race for a House seat that hasn\u2019t been held by a Democrat in 28 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">\u2018<st1:place st=\"on\">Southern New Mexico<\/st1:place> is highly competitive\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Brian Col\u00f3n, chairman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico, said it should come as no surprise that the presidential campaigns are focusing on the south.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe media is starting to realize what Democrats have known since 2006, when Gov. Richardson won the south with a large margin,\u201d Col\u00f3n said. \u201cSouthern New Mexico is highly competitive and, with the help of a strong Democratic ticket with Harry Teague and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a> on the ballot, southern <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> will play an important role in electing Sen. Obama as the next president of the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city>\u2019s supporters have long been one of the keys to southern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. In the primary, Obama narrowly won northern <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>\u2019s 3rd District and the Albuquerque-area 1st District, but <st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city> easily won the more conservative 2nd District in southern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> by several thousand votes, which propelled her to a statewide victory of 1,709 votes out of about 150,000 cast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename> &#8212; the most populous in the 2nd District and a Democratic stronghold &#8212; <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> easily won by about 1,200 votes out of almost 9,500 cast. The conservative Democratic voters who propelled her to victory don\u2019t agree with McCain on some issues, but they are also more conservative than Obama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city> has been similarly important to Obama\u2019s chances in conservative, Hispanic Democratic areas in northern <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> like <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Rio<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Arriba<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. <a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicoindependent.com\/377\/hillary-clinton-talks-about-the-guv-stumping-for-obama-and-being-in-nm\" target=\"_blank\">She visited that county<\/a> for Obama in August. <a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicoindependent.com\/21\/barack-obama-stumps-in-northern-new-mexico-to-woo-hispanics\" target=\"_blank\">Obama made his own trip to Espa\u00f1ola<\/a> in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>\u2019s south valley<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Garcia recently <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/why-obama-needs-doa-ana-countys-south.html\">authored a commentary<\/a> arguing that Obama needs to visit southern Do\u00f1a Ana County before the Nov. 4 election, and he reiterated the region\u2019s importance for Obama in today\u2019s interview. He said Obama was attempting to reach 30,000 Hispanic voters in <st1:placename st=\"on\">Rio<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Arriba<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype>, but in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> he would be reaching out to 130,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The traditionally ignored south valley is an area where turnout could be fairly low if Obama doesn\u2019t visit, but fairly high if he does, Garcia said, so an Obama visit to Sunland Park or Anthony would provide the candidate with more of a bounce than a stop in any other area in southern New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cLargely, these are people who are predisposed to voting Democrat, although they have voted Republican in congressional races and other races,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cHispanics are clearly going to support Obama, but the question is, how big is the margin? Hispanics who voted for Hillary who aren\u2019t yet enthused about Obama, that\u2019s what these visits are all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Obama campaign spokesman Carlos Sanchez said <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename> \u201cis critical to the success of the Obama-Biden campaign in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe are leaving no stone unturned as we make our case to southern New Mexicans about why Barack Obama is the only candidate that can bring change to hard-working families,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cWe know that every part of <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> is important and essential to winning this election in November, and that is why have 39 offices statewide and a strong presence in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the county, the Obama campaign has offices in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, Anthony and Hatch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The McCain campaign and Republican Party didn\u2019t provide comment for this article beyond releasing a statement disputing a CNN report that McCain is <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/is-mccain-giving-up-on-nm-it-doesnt.html\">giving up on New Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe see the race tightening both internally and in public polling,\u201d read the statement from McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker. \u201cWe are within striking distance in the key battleground states we need to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">A prior version of this posting incorrectly stated that Clinton was scheduled to appear at 3 p.m. in Canutillo.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that Barack Obama and John McCain believe New Mexico\u2019s five electoral votes hinge on what happens in the southern region of the state on Nov. 4.
