That\u2019s what CNN\u2019s John King is reporting, but there are lots of signs that McCain is still working hard to win the state\u2019s five electoral votes, including a possible Saturday visit by the Republican presidential candidate to Mesilla.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This is what King reported today:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWith two weeks left, they are making the tough decisions inside the McCain camp. And they are beginning to look at some states that they thought they could win, and some states they even thought they had to win, and beginning to think that they are drifting away,\u201d King said in a video report you can watch by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/thepage.time.com\/john-king-on-cnn\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u201cMost people top in the McCain campaign now believe <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> are gone, that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> will win <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. They are now off the dream list for the McCain campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMost top people inside the McCain campaign,\u201d King reported, also \u201cthink <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to King, McCain plans to focus on winning <st1:state st=\"on\">Florida<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">North Carolina<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Ohio<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Virginia<\/st1:state>, and coming from behind to win <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Pennsylvania<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, where he is trailing significantly in the polls. The Real Clear Politics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/pa\/pennsylvania_mccain_vs_obama-244.html\" target=\"_blank\">average of recent polls in Pennsylvania<\/a> has Obama leading by 11.7 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But King\u2019s report doesn\u2019t match with the actions of the McCain campaign in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCain <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/palin-attacks-obama-rallies-gop-base.html\">sent Sarah Palin to Roswell<\/a> on Sunday, the day before King\u2019s video report. If McCain was giving up on <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, why waste time and money to send his running mate here?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And it looks like McCain is coming to the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> area in the coming days. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/ci_10769339\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a> is reporting that the Mesilla Board of Trustees is scheduled to consider on Wednesday a request from the McCain campaign to use the town\u2019s plaza for an event on Saturday. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kvia.com\/global\/story.asp?s=9208462\" target=\"_blank\">KVIA-TV<\/a> in <st1:city st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:city> is quoting a McCain staffer as saying McCain will visit the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> area sometime in the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCain staffers remain active in the state, and the campaign, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/newmexico.johnmccain.com\/sitelocations.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">McCain\u2019s Web site<\/a>, has 13 offices in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. To top it off, the candidate himself took time on Monday morning to give a phone interview to 770 KKOB-AM\u2019s Peter St. Cyr. You can listen to it by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/wordcab.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/mccain-criticizes-obamas-economic-plan.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s certainly true that Obama has become more aggressive in southern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, which is McCain country, in recent days as he seeks to make gains in GOP strongholds in several swing states. Obama sent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/learn\/meet_joe.php\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Biden<\/a> to Mesilla last week and is sending <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> to southern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> on Saturday as he works to gain ground in the only congressional district in the state McCain is expected to win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But McCain is trailing by a larger margin in <st1:state st=\"on\">Pennsylvania<\/st1:state> than he is in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. The Real Clear Politics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/nm\/new_mexico_mccain_vs_obama-448.html\" target=\"_blank\">average of recent polls in the Land of Enchantment<\/a> puts Obama ahead by 8.4 percentage points. Why pull out of <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> and stay in <st1:state st=\"on\">Pennsylvania<\/st1:state> if he\u2019s trailing by a greater margin in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Pennsylvania<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The McCain campaign could not immediately be reached for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is John McCain giving up on New Mexico?
