\"\"<\/a>ROSWELL<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> — Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin<\/a> broke little new ground during her rally here on Sunday, but that wasn\u2019t her goal: She made a quick trip to the \u201cLittle Texas\u201d corner of the state to rally conservative base voters. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

And rally the GOP base she did. Palin devoted much of her speech to attacking Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama<\/a>, accusing him of favoring socialism with a plan to redistribute wealth and questioning his ties to the controversial voter-registration group ACORN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cSen. Obama said he wants to spread the wealth. What that means is he wants the government to take your money and let a politician decide how to spend it,\u201d Palin told those in attendance at the rally. \u201c\u2026 I think it sounds like socialism.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Palin also laid out Republican presidential candidate John McCain\u2019s<\/a> plans to cut taxes, take on Wall Street and clean up Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The Alaska<\/st1:state> governor, on her second trip to New Mexico<\/st1:state> as McCain\u2019s running mate, spoke to an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people in a large hangar at the Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> airport. The overwhelming majority of those in attendance were white in a community that is 12 percent Hispanic and 12 percent black.<\/p>\n

The sun beat down as the crowd overflowed onto the runway outside the hangar, and several people fainted in the heat as they waited hours for Palin to arrive. Despite that, the crowd was loud and energetic during Palin\u2019s speech.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Preceding Palin<\/span><\/p>\n

There was plenty to keep people entertained as they waited for Palin to arrive — which she did at about 3:40 p.m., only a few minutes after the time her speech was scheduled to begin but hours after doors to the event opened at 11 a.m. Before Palin arrived, the wives of U.S. Senate candidate Steve Pearce<\/a> and 2nd Congressional District hopeful Ed Tinsley<\/a> urged voters to support McCain and their husbands. Prior commitments prevented both Republican candidates from attending the rally.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Cynthia Pearce urged people to vote based on their values.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThe principles of the Republican Party are under attack, but we have the opportunity to turn this election around,\u201d she told those in attendance. \u201c\u2026 When Republicans act and vote like Republicans, we win.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Meredith Tinsley said she and her husband are \u201cbig fans\u201d of Palin.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cWe know she shares our common-sense, conservative and Western values,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Country singer Hank Williams Jr.<\/a> warmed up the crowd for Palin by playing several songs and talking about his support for the McCain\/Palin ticket. At one point he referred to the Obama candidacy as \u201cbull crap,\u201d and said the American people will see through it.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m prouder in the last two weeks than I\u2019ve ever been to be an American, \u2018cause I\u2019m not gonna sit around on my butt while this race is going on,\u201d said Williams, who has appeared at several rallies with Palin.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u2018The right choice\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Palin was introduced by the retiring Sen. Pete Domenici<\/a>, who called her \u201cthe right choice for our next vice president.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Pulling from the list of now-familiar lines she\u2019s been using on the campaign trail, Palin called McCain \u201cthe only one who talks about the wars America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s fighting and isn\u2019t afraid to use the word \u2018victory.\u2019\u201d She also called McCain the only candidate in the race \u201cwho has ever really fought for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The presidential race is a choice between very different candidates, Palin said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the choice between a politician who puts his faith in government and a leader who puts his faith in you,\u201d she said. \u201c\u2026 It\u2019s a choice between a politician who will not disavow a group committing voter fraud (ACORN) and a leader who will not allow it.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

In addition to tax cuts, Palin spoke about energy independence, health care and college education. She also talked about doing more to help children with special needs. When Palin arrived at the event, she walked off the airplane and along a path toward the crowd with her infant son Trig in her arms. Trig has Down syndrome.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Palin handed Trig off to someone before she reached the stage, and he wasn\u2019t seen again during Palin\u2019s brief stop in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. Following her speech, Palin signed autographs before boarding her plane and heading to Colorado Springs<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n

Domenici said following the event that Palin \u201cdid great\u201d and spoke about every issue on the minds of voters. He said she \u201creally talked about the guts and the difference between the two parties.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Domenici said he believes the presidential race in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> will be close, and he hopes Palin\u2019s message \u201cwill excite voters enough to spread the word.\u201d<\/p>\n

Palin\u2019s rally was preceded by a Friday visit to Mesilla<\/a> by Obama\u2019s running mate, Joe Biden<\/a>.<\/p>\n
