{"id":3852,"date":"2008-10-15T10:54:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-15T16:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/aragon-pleads-guilty-in-metro-court-case\/"},"modified":"2008-10-15T10:54:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-15T16:54:00","slug":"aragon-pleads-guilty-in-metro-court-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/10\/aragon-pleads-guilty-in-metro-court-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Aragon pleads guilty in metro court case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SPYgktJGyqI\/AAAAAAAAJC0\/mvB7bn7TJis\/s1600-h\/Aragon,+Manny.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SPYgktJGyqI\/AAAAAAAAJC0\/mvB7bn7TJis\/s200\/Aragon,+Manny.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257425429966801570\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Former state Senate President Manny Aragon, one of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s most storied politicians, pleaded guilty today to three felony counts of conspiracy and mail fraud in the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Courthouse scandal.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The deal he struck with prosecutors means he could face up to 67 months in federal prison, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/abqnews\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=9052&amp;Itemid=2\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> is reporting. <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Aragon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> could have faced 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 if he had gone to trial and been convicted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Aragon<\/st1:country-region> refused to comment to reporters after leaving the courtroom in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> where he entered his plea earlier this morning, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/ci_10726311\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press<\/a> is reporting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Aragon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> was accused of pocketing more than $600,000 in the scheme in which prosecutors say he and several others stole $4.2 million in taxpayer money by inflating and falsifying invoices during construction of the courthouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Aragon, a Democrat, was Senate president from 1988 to 2001 and majority leader for three years until he left the Senate in 2004 to become president of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Highlands<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. He was ousted from that job last year following controversy when the school paid him $200,000 to buy out his contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Three other defendants &#8212; engineer Raul Parra, former court administrator Toby Martinez and his wife, Sandra Mata Martinez &#8212; have pleaded guilty to felony charges in recent days for their roles in the illegal scheme. And three others &#8212; architect Marc Schiff, former Albuquerque Mayor and lobbyist Ken Schultz and contractor Manuel Guara &#8212; entered into plea bargains months ago, before any indictments became public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That leaves only former construction manager Michael Murphy scheduled to go to trial on Oct. 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Aragon<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>\u2019s admission to felony charges comes less than three weeks before the Nov. 4 election. What impact it might have, if any, isn\u2019t immediately clear, but it certainly can\u2019t help Democrats. The office of the state\u2019s top Democrat, Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a>, said the governor had no comment on <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Aragon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s guilty plea. The state Democratic and Republican parties did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 2:50 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">State Republican Party spokeswoman Shira Rawlinson said Republicans \u201chave known that Manny Aragon has been a part of corrupt, back-room politics for decades. It\u2019s an unfortunate episode for <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state>, but <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Aragon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> admitting his guilt only proves what we\u2019ve known for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.darrenwhiteforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Darren White<\/a>, the Republican 1st Congressional District candidate, released a statement quoting an Associated Press article that pointed out that, when White was former Gov. Gary Johnson\u2019s secretary of public safety, he \u201cdid what few in state government have dared to do: publicly criticize Aragon\u2019s involvement in debates and legislative decision about privately operated prisons in New Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs Darren correctly pointed out, Manny Aragon was a \u2018bought-and-paid-for\u2019 consultant for the industry he was in charge of regulating,\u201d White spokesman Stephen Schatz said in the news release. \u201cDarren White has long fought against shady deals, corruption and ethics violations throughout his career &#8212; from <st1:city st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:city> to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. When he is elected to Congress, Darren will continue do the same thing and fight for the citizens of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 10:40 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> spokesman Gilbert Gallegos released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe governor is satisfied that the judicial process has run its course,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have many dedicated public officials serving honorably on behalf of New Mexicans, and it\u2019s time to move forward and work to restore the <span class=\"yshortcuts\"><span style=\"cursor: pointer; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial; background-attachment: scroll;\" id=\"lw_1224131832_0\">public trust<\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 11 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Former U.S. Attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Igleslias\" target=\"_blank\">David Iglesias<\/a>, who headed that office when it began its investigation into <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Aragon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, said he wanted to commend the office for \u201cobtaining a fair plea to a matter involving a serious breach of the public trust. White collar cases take a long time to investigate and properly prosecute &#8212; I\u2019m proud my former office took their time and did it right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Those words carry a lot of weight considering that Iglesias alleges that he was fired because he refused pressure in October 2006 from top Republicans to speed the indictment of <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Aragon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> in time to sway voters in the November 2006 election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As for this election, Iglesias said he doubts the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Aragon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> plea will affect it \u201cgiven the enormous problems facing the state and country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former state Senate President Manny Aragon, one of New Mexico\u2019s most storied politicians, pleaded guilty today to three felony counts of conspiracy and mail fraud in the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Courthouse scandal.
